While it seems as if the late, great Jack Davis did a million covers for the TV Guide, he really only drew a couple dozen covers, starting in 1968. I�m very pleased to be able to offer the final prelim to Davis� very first TV Guide cover, which saw print on July 13, 1968. The cover features three of the lead characters from the Andy Griffith Show; Andy himself, Jim Neighbors, and Don Knotts. I'm particularly enamored of the Knotts caricature, which Davis simply nailed.

As you can see by the images above, the final printed version of the cover was different than this prelim, though I actually prefer the preliminary illustration, with Andy cranking money out of that TV machine. Maybe someone from the network found the cash part of the image too crass, but the show was certainly a money maker. The other additional image is of the back of the board, which has some of Jack's ink wash swipes, as well as a drawing of a Roadrunner-type bird.

The heavy illustration board measures 14�x 10�, with the image area measuring 11��x 7��. The condition is very nice, with two lightly bonked corners, well away from the image. There�s also an old Sotheby�s auction sticker in the lower left corner, which I�ve left for the sake of provenance. I have no idea when this piece was auctioned off by Sotheby�s. I will include a copy of the printed TV Guide with this artwork, though the TV Guide will be mailed under separate cover. $1100.00 + 30.00 Priority/Registered/Insured shipping.
