Description

Chon Day (1907-2000), whose full name was Chauncey Addison Day, was a longtime contributing cartoonist to many of the major magazines, including the New Yorker, the Saturday Evening Post, and Look. A cartoonist of the less-is-more school, Day's use of ink wash (and blue wash for Zip-a-Tone), supported his beautifully simplified line work perfectly. Considered a master of the to-the-point punchline, Day rarely went for the jugular, preferring more gentle, observational humor. His most well-known character creation, Brother Sebastian, was created in the pages of Look. in 1954. I’m pleased to present a sweet Chon Day original that appeared in Rascal magazine, likely in the 1950s. The cartoon a bank teller who has been arrested. He says, “I think it’s only fair to note that in keeping with our traditional policy of conservatism that I played all the horses to show.” A terrific gag paired with some truly wonderful, understated drawing. Measuring 10¾”x 8¾”, the cartoon is in Fine condition, with a slight ripple due to the watercolor wash used by Day. The cartoon is drawn on a lightweight paper. $75.00 + 9.00 First Class shipping.
