DescriptionClifford Berryman (1869-1949) started off as a cartoonist for the Washington Post, spending the vast majority of his career at the Washington Star. Berryman was one of the nation’s best known political cartoonists, but his greatest claim to fame was the creation of his 1902 cartoon that spawned the Teddy Bear, after Teddy Roosevelt. I’m really pleased to be able to offer a sweet pair of early Teddy Bear drawings by Berryman! These two drawings were all done on 7½”x 5¼” laid guestbook paper. One drawing was done in 1910, while the second was drawn in 1913. They are really early examples of Berryman’s wonderful bear! Berryman has signed each page, along with other guests at the parties. The drawings are also signed on the back by other guests, but there is no bleed-through to the front. This is a wonderful pair of drawings by the man who created one of the truly iconic characters in the 20th century.
