DescriptionSyd Hoff (1912-2004) was one of the most distinctive cartoonists and children’s book authors/artists during the 20th century. His Danny and the Dinosaur books are forever favorites of children everywhere, but Hoff excelled as a panel cartoonist for many publications, including the New Yorker, Esquire, Look, and The Daily Worker. The latter was done under the pseudonym of A. Redfield. Hoff’s cartoon style was similar in nature to William Stieg’s early work, with bold, lush brushwork, elegantly and cleanly composed. I’m pleased to offer up a wonderful magazine cartoon that likely appeared in Esquire magazine in 1947. The piece is stamped November 18, 1947 on the reverse, and came in a small batch of other cartoons from the same magazine. An executive type sits on his secretary’s lap, stating “My wife says you can’t sit on my lap.” Boy, the times have changed for the better. But still, this is a pretty wonderful example of Hoff’s early cartoon work, with bold brush contour lines and wonderful gray watercolor wash work. The artwork is quite wonderful, with everything you could want in a Hoff magazine cartoon. Given Hoff’s prodigious output, it’s surprising that his original cartoons are not all that common. This is a terrific example, though the condition could be better. It has been damp-stained along the lower border and up into the left and right borders. A tiny bit of the damp-staining enters the artwork, but it’s barely noticeable. As such, this piece is bargain-priced. The piece measures 10”x 15”. A truly terrific example of Syd Hoff’s cartoon artwork, even in lesser condition. $135.00 + 14.00 First Class shipping.Social/Sharing |
