Description

Simply put, Pat Oliphant (1935 - ) is one of the greatest political cartoonists of the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century. With both a biting line and wit, Oliphant has pulled few punches in his powerful political and editorial commentaries over the decades. Oliphant began his cartooning career in his home country of Australia, later moving the United States where he began to work for the Denver Post, where he won the Pulitzer Prize for Cartooning in 1967. Oliphant later moved out east and worked for the Washington Star until the paper folded in 1981. Oliphant went independent after that, with his cartoons syndicated by the Universal Press Syndicate until Oliphant�s 2015 retirement from editorial cartooning. I�m very pleased to be able to offer a prime editorial cartoon by Oliphant that was published on November 28, 1968. A man in a plaid smoking jacket is holding his wife who has fainted, with the caption: �Smelling salts, James � Aristotle Onassis has cracked the New York Social Register!� The woman has her hand on the Social Register for 1969. As with anything, timing is everything. Just a month earlier, on October 20, 1968, Onassis married Jackie Kennedy, which apparently afforded Onassis into New York�s upper crust, much to the dismay of our fallen heroine. The drawing is bold and brilliant, done entirely in brush and India ink. Style-wise, there almost seems to be a bit of a nod to the great Ronald Searle. You�ll also note Oliphant�s use of Craftint, which adds a lovely patina on the walls. The piece is in nice condition, at least a solid Fine. It measures 11�x 17��, and has its original cover sheet still attached. This is really wonderful stuff, by one of the true, true greats of political cartooning. $400.00 + 17.00 first class shipping.
