DescriptionCarl Ed (1890-1959) is most well-known for his hip strip Harold Teen, which helped to popularize the slang of the day among the younger set. Slang such as "shebas", "sheiks" and "pantywaist” were regularly found in Ed’s strip. Ed should also be given some acclaim for his work as an instructor at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where he helped mentor some young cartoonists, including Roy Crane and Russell Johnson. In the early 1930s, Ed had a commercial gig with the Armour Meat Company, doing a comic strip for the company’s internal newspaper, “The Armour Oval”. Victor Veribest. The strip featured Victor himself, who was an Armour worker. It has very much the vibe of Harold Teen, and even features a similar character. In this case our teen hero is unable to get his cowlick to lay down properly. Vic to the rescue! With a can of Armour Star Lard! The drawing is prime Ed, with some really wonderful and active pen work. And check out Ed’s handling of the interior of the Lard Department, with those white scratches through the black, to give some atmosphere. I’ve only owned one other such original many years ago, and have heard of maybe five in total. The piece is large, measuring 9˝”x 23”, nearly the same size as a Mutt and Jeff original. There is some dustiness on the far-left edge and a bonked corner on the lower right. As you can see, both are quite far from the art area and could easily be matted out. The dustiness could likely be erased quite easily. In total, the strip is in VG+. Circa 1933. $135.00 + 17.00 first class shipping. SOLD!Social/Sharing |
