DescriptionA.B. Frost (1851-1928) was one of the greatest illustrators of the latter part of the 19th century and into the 20th century. Frost’s early narrative works (Bull Calf, Tale of a Cat, etc.) helped set the stage for early comic strips, and they also showed his mastery of figure movement in pen and ink. Later in life, Frost gained new renown as a sporting artist, depicting hunting scenes and the like, but to my mind, it was his narrative ink pieces in which Frost truly excelled. His figure work in those pieces—whether human or animal—seem to owe something of a debt to Eadweard Muybridge’s stop-action photography of the late 19th century. I’m pleased to offer a wonderful original pen & ink illustration intended for Frost's 1913 book, "Carlo", which was very much an early graphic novel. I say intended, because the piece that ran is ever so slightly different than this version. If you compare this original to the printed version (in the additional images), you’ll find the that the differences are quite minor. This is the second image in the book, where the grumpy Patrick brings Carlo around to the house. The pen work in the piece is lively and wonderful, especially in the Patrick’s figure. Just look at that wonderful hatching in the ink work. As a true bonus, you’ll see that the illustration is signed and inscribed to Frost’s friend H.T. Webster. A great association! Measuring 11¼”x nearly 14½”, the artwork is in solid Fine condition. The piece was previously matted and framed and you can see just a hair of toning. You can also see some glue remnants at the very upper edge of the paper, away from the image area. All else is quite fine. Uncommon stuff offered for an excellent price. $435.00 + 15.00 first class shipping. SOLD!Social/Sharing |
