Description

Yep, I’m back with another wonderful, vintage Cap Stubbs daily strip. I was able to purchase a short stack of early dailies many years ago, but that stack is dwindling. Anyone who knows me knows that 1) I love Edwina Dumm’s (1893-1990) work on Cap Stubbs and, 2) believe her to be a woefully underrated cartoonist. Edwina had such a wonderful way of working with pen & ink, drawing both humans and animals in a joyful manner. I also find her work to be one of the best bargains in comic strip art. While I enjoy both versions of Edwina’s Tippie dogs, I’m partial to the bulldog version. There is something about that wonderful contour line and terrific expressions that draw me in. If you read my blog post about Edwina and her work, you might recall that I wrote about the 1932 transition from the bulldog Tippie to the terrier version of our dog pal. Here’s the nickel version of the story: in February 1932, bulldog Tippie goes missing, and of course Cap is inconsolable. On February 19, terrier Tippie (as yet unnamed) enters into the household, though Cap is still heartbroken over his missing pal. But do not fear! At the end of April, Cap receives a letter informing him that bulldog Tippie has been found and the two pals are reunited in early May! Lonny Brown, a boy who needed a crutch to walk, had built such a strong relationship with bulldog Tippie, that Cap thought it best the Tippie 1.0 go to live with him. For the next couple of years, Lonnie would make appearances in the strip, with Tippie 1.0, but by 1935 or so, it was all terrier Tippie.

I’m pleased to be able to offer a really wonderful example of Edwina’s Cap Stubbs that features both Tippies! While Edwina’s work is no longer uncommon, her early work, such as this daily from November 30, 1933, do not show up very often. And dailies that feature both versions of her canine pals are not common at all. And just check out that drawing! There is so much joy in this daily strip, especially in panel #4, with Cap and Tippie running, with those big smiles on their faces. I also love the joy on the two Tippies’ faces as they see each other. Truly wonderful cartooning. The daily strip is large, measuring 7¼”x 22½. The strip is very lightly toned, but in solid Fine+ condition. You can see where Edwina made a mistake with the upper panel lines and made a correction above the art area. For a strip that is over 90 years old, it is in remarkably good condition. Wonderful work by one of the great cartoonists of the 20th century. $100.00 + 17.00 First Class shipping. SOLD!
