DescriptionEarly stylized McFarlane page featuring Batman vs. The Reaper. Packed full of action lines and McFarlane action from the first to last panel. As cram-packed full of details as those middle panels are, I also love the simplicity of Batman and The Reaper in those first and last panels.Todd McFarlane on pencils and inks. This is the first (and only) all McFarlane issue of Batman in any series. Back in 1987, Todd McFarlane worked on Detective Comics issues 576, 577, & 578. These issues were parts 2-4 of the "Year Two" story vs. The Reaper. Alan Davis & Paul Neary did the art for part 1 (Detective #575). Alfredo Alcala did the inks over McFarlane's pencils for issues 576 & 577. Issue 578 is the only issue with all McFarlane art. "Year Two" is the famous story vs. The Reaper where Batman decided to carry a gun and planned to kill Joe Chill to get revenge for killing his parents many years earlier. Released the same year as Frank Miller's successful "Year One" story, editors at DC decided to title this arc "Year Two" and make it an early telling of Batman's formative years. Batman: Year Two - Chapter Four: "...So Shall Ye Reap..." -September 1987 story: Mike W. Barr pencils: Todd McFarlane inks: Todd McFarlane Social/Sharing |

Holy McBatlane, Daryl!
I knew his Batman work was brief but I had not realized there was only one issue that was all him. Also a fan of those top panels, subtly presented but clearly Batman is dialed in on driving with precision & speed.
What a very cool pick up, congrats!

This was a pretty important moment where McFarlane starts inking himself, his idiosyncracies really made him stand out when this was released. Very cool to add to your collection. Excellent find.

Incredibly cool McFarlane Bat-Action! And even cooler that it's all Todd.

If you're a DC guy and a McFarlane lover, then this is the perfect piece for any collection. I mean, really, McFarlane Spidey would be so much cooler if he was in the DCU, but since he's a Marvel character, he's pretty much trash and not worth collecting. (I hope Paul P doesn't see this comment or he'd come straight at me) Haha.

There are big bats and then there are little bats, and this is definitely a big bat. Some might even call it a sky puppy. Congrats on a very fitting McFarlane addition to the collection!

That unique McFarlane storytelling from panel layout to in-panel action and different techniques that McFarlane became famous for...all on display in some of his early Big 2 stuff here! Great top to bottom goodness starting with that first panel! Big congrats, bud!
