DescriptionThis book plate illustration was published in the 1994 novel "Batman: Knightfall and Beyond" by Alan Grant. There were 15 full page illustrations in the novel and this is #15.Summarizing the events of the Knightfall, Knightsend, and Knightquest storylines, the novel was released at the same time those storylines were concluding. When Bruce Wayne was broken by Bane in "Knightfall," Jean Paul Valley (Azrael) later assumed the mantle of the bat and reigned throughout the "Knightquest" storylines. This scene is from the conclusion of the story where Bruce Wayne has reclaimed his mantle and is in action again as the rightful Batman. Penciled by Graham Nolan Inked by Scott Hanna Social/Sharing |

Batman takes back his mantle from Azbats! Showing why the man behind the mask is just as important as the Image outside. Nolan and Hanna were the team that had the more super-hero take on Batman and helped usher in the next era of Batman stories.

Yep! Nolan and Hanna were the current team on Detective Comics during the Knightquest and Knightsend era when Azbats was running amok and they continued to usher in the following era when Bruce returned. I am biased, but I believe this book plate could have easily been used as a cover showcasing Bruce's triumphant return.

Graham's Batman is one of the ones I measure all others against - him, Aparo and Breyfogle set the tone and look for me and while there have been incredible renditions of Batman since those times, I still measure all against these three. Absolute beauty.

For me, these plates are all about the lighting choices that Nolan made. He really is able to show off his skills in many areas via these, but he really uses the lighting to showcase Batman perfectly. Simply beautiful! Huge congrats!
