DescriptionCarl has a hole in his head, “I can see your . . . eye socket - your . . . skull is exposed. Now I want to touch it. Can I touch it?”This is my representative piece for the comic AND tv series that I enjoy so very much. I was very late to the game of zombies. I didn’t pick up or care much about the comic series til it nearly ended. My brother pleaded for me to jump in but if it wasn’t mutants or X-Gene related I unfortunately didn’t spend much time on it. He even got me the first two large compendiums years ago, but I still didn’t budge. My loss and definitely his gain as he still has WD #1 1st print and someday I will likely pay way too much for one of my own. This page for me, like my SWEET TOOTH page, captures the essence of this series. Kirkman’s phenomenally cultish writing and Adlard’s expressively impactful art made this series the fan favorite franchise that it continues to be, well after it’s incarnation almost two decades ago. This moment in comics and on the series where we see Carl with a hole in his face where his eye used to be was a cultural phenomenon. It took over social media, it was a widely seen costume at the cons and became a wonderful example in the land of WALKING DEAD that nothing lasts forever and if things seem to be at some point looking up . . . just hold there for a minute, it’s sure to be crashing down with a gunshot wound to a child’s head and a grown man making him cry through the one good eye he has left. Adlard’s panels with Kirkman’s writing make a “DEAD”ly pairing, please see additional image for full discourse between Carl and Negan, it’s brutal, as it should be. I enjoy the repeated middle panels where there is just a slight alteration when Carl starts to cry. In the original art the middle published panel is missing, since I am guessing it was assumed to repeat one of the panels, which is great as the changes in Carl’s face are so subtle (same image for published piece, just with alteration on 1 image duplicated but to be that extra beat of a moment right before the tear forms). Glad to have this little piece of comic history and cultural history to represent my late love for the series both comic and tv. Social/Sharing |

That Carl and Negan relationship was shown and developed quite a bit in the show too. Negan wanted him to the future leader of mankind and shed a tear when he learned of his death.

That expression in the top panel, along with his dialogue, reminds me how refreshing of a character he was. Long live Negan!!

Negan is gold pretty much every time he speaks in these pages! My second all time favorite villain only to the Joker. Great page!🍻

Huge story moment and a perfect example of how Adlard can properly display non verbal emotion. Carl's missing eye is enough to even get a reaction out of Negan, and that's sayin' somethin'! Fantastic interior!
