DescriptionAt this point, I had greenlit the final prelim and discussed with Paul what size the painting was going to be. I thought that the next time I heard from him would be to finish payment and arrange shipping. But that was not to happen. A mere couple of weeks later I received an unexpected call from Paul's wife, informing me that he had just been diagnosed with late stage cancer, but that he wanted to start the painting anyway. I was, of course, shocked and saddened by the news and surprised that he wanted to begin work on the painting, though at a slightly smaller size. I agreed and waited to hear back from Paul. Instead, a couple of weeks after that I heard from his wife that the painting was unfinished, and that Paul had done all that he could. On July 28, 1998 Paul Lehr passed away.I was in my mid 40's when this happened and I remember how deeply this impressed on me that tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone. When Paul and I began this commission, we had no idea that time was against us. Cherish every day that you have, because you never know what lies ahead. A few months later I was given the opportunity to purchase the unfinished painting from Paul's widow and I did so. Now, for the first time seen publicly, Paul Lehr's final painting, "Lords of the Starship." (Acrylics over oils on masonite, 24" x 24") Social/Sharing |

Woah. It is incredible that he still had the strength to keep creating until the very end. It's rich and beautiful. I would love to see his work in person one day.

The journey of the process and the final descisions made here have been very rewarding to follow. The brightness of colors chosen give this a more hopeful optimism feel.

How very apropos, that his final painting is of a rocket ship pointed towards the heavens. Like a phoenix rising from the flame, this can be seen as Lehr's soul, getting ready to ascend to the stars, one final time. Thanks for sharing the process and especially the story, Glynn!

Exceptional! Always loved Paul's work. Next to Frazetta Lehr influenced my early love of fantasy art the most.
