DescriptionJust read an article posted a couple days ago stating that next year is Ghost Rider’s 50th anniversary, since appearing in Marvel Spotlight #5, and that they’ll be starting up a new series in February in accordance. That, and Halloween being in a couple of days, I thought it’d be prime time to post this FIERY splash by maestro Paolo Rivera! Not my first piece by Paolo – got a pencil page inked by his pops – but this is my first painted one. Had in the back of my head to pick one up at some point, but it was brought to the fore recently when collector bud “JN 80” posted some outstanding painted Rivera examples a few months back – check ‘em out in his gallery if you haven’t! So I HAD to go gets mine :)Speaks for itself I think. Everyone in awe up top with Johnny turning into GR right while making the jump, and you can see in the background, it’s in Viva Las Vegas. Mythos: GR was a one-shot kind of retelling of GR’s origin by Paul Jenkins and Paolo, and it’s gorgeous throughout – if interested in Paolo’s art thoughts and process for his art on the book, check this out: https://paolorivera.blogspot.com/2012/08/painting-ghost-rider.html. I love his work. He’s got a realism to his paintings in terms of the rendering and finishes, but it’s still very much got that traditional more cartoony comic book look at its core. He melds ‘em perfectly. Here the paint strokes are a sight to behold in person. GR’s just perfect subject matter for paints because of the flames – affords a strong organic feel, and powerful! Bike looks awesome, too. I’ve pored over this one a lot. And y’know what? It’s only 9x12. But trust when I say it doesn’t take anything away. This’ll definitely be getting framed. Also included a pic of the published image, which is pretty much the same as the original with some lettering – lyrics to the song “Ghost Riders in the Sky”. The preceding pages have the preceding lyrics leading up to the big line, and song namesake, lettered big and bold here with the big splash of the book. Great stuff. Johnny Cash’s version of the song is most known, but I figure I’d include the version by Spiderbait here, as it was used in the first Nic Cage GR film. "Yippee Ki Ay!" :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWd3Ti7QzkY Thanks, Paolo, and rep Mark at Splash Page! Social/Sharing |

No fear in ridin' and no fear of dyin'. I have all the faith in the world he'll make it because those straps are made of fire proof genuine Saskatchewan seal-skin bindings.

Absolutely superb, K - scatchamagowza! As intense as the flames look on Johnny, the thing that really sells it for me is that top panel of the crowd in the bleachers, and the lighting on their faces & reflections in their glasses lenses. A wonderful shot to incorporate on the page, masterfully executed. Incredible work; please post an additional image when you get it framed! LOVE it!

Thanks, man, and totally agree! We've chatted before - some of the best pages are splashes that provide just a little panel storytelling to help frame (pun intended), and sell even (as you note!), the impact of the splash!

Spock always ran off to the circus on away missions. This irresponsibility is why they lost so many red shirts. Where does Ghost Rider land? You guessed it. Red shirt.

I remember you showing off this baby -- well freakin' deserved, man. Ghost Rider is a tough character who when rendered either is a home run or not good enough, one or the other... and we can safely call this art a grand slam !!

I saw it awhile back, dug it for sure, among some of the other pages from the book, but moved on to other things. Chatting with my bud JN 80 a few months ago and looking at what he settled on as far as painted Rivera pieces...yeah...prompted me to go back and check..and it was still there. DONE! :) Thanks, Nash!

Rivera is a brilliant artist and has been consistently putting out great work for such a long time. Aside from this being a beautiful painting, my favourite part is the return of the one TRUE Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze! Kick ass, man!

It's funny, my first GR was Dan Ketch, with the release of that series in 1990, which I dug. But about a year later, a book called "The Original Ghost Rider Rides Again" was released, reprinting some of the original Johnny Blaze stories. Loved 'em. Loved the bike, but even more so, that leather suit. Classic. Just a perfect design choice for the character, and I'm definitely STOKED to have Paolo's rendition here. Thanks, Ruben!

This brillant and fiery piece needs to be displayed in a fireproof frame, far away from your other pieces! And UV radiation has to be protected from this piece and not vice versa! Pure Gold...

This piece has everything you'd ever want in a Ghost Rider splash, and painted so beautifully! Must be a sight in person. And yes, very appropriate for Halloween coming up tomorrow night. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Mwah ha ha HAAHHHH!

Love the shot of the crowd at the top of the page. Rivera makes sure he's not just focusing his talent on the page's main attraction. Top notch stuff here.

Straight fire, Kahlil! The Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider design is one of my favorite in comics. The spikes and chains are sweet, too, but that fold over leather biker jacket with the white edging is just chef's kiss perfect, imo. And in living color, no less! Is he jumping out of the pit and away from Zarathos? Love this layout. And I am 100% subscribing to that title. Ghost Rider coming back means I do, too. :) Blazing congrats!

Exactly! See my reply to Ruben's comment. The leather jacket, man...too good. Yes, perfecto, mtwah! I've been semi on the lookout for a nice bronze example...may have to drop the "semi" now :) Thanks, J - glad you like!

Holy crap, this is jaw-droppingly insane Khalil! I literally had the same expression as everyone in that top panel when I clicked into this piece. Amazing.

A painted piece by Paolo Rivera is rare enough, but this beauty is extraordinary! Ghost Rider has never been depicted in this manner; the fire seems to be burning him from within. Just an amazing piece. Big congratulations!

Paolo can do no wrong. There are so many amazing images of Ghost Rider and this sits in the top tier. All of it, the perspective, the crowd, the flames. It's stunning.
Thanks for sharing.

For me Paolo's painted style is WHAT IF: Norman Rockwell did comic art. Great piece!
