DescriptionWelcome to 2023, all! I start off CAF new years with a first piece in the collection by an artist, and for ’23, that’s Mr. Frank Quitely!Quite frankly, I needed a New X-Men page by him. This book blew me away when it was released almost 22 years ago. I wasn’t very familiar with Morrison or Quitely, as I almost exclusively read Marvel, but I was hooked from the get. Remember the opening title page in issue #114, with those descending horizontal panels? Cyke’s beaming visor, Jean taking apart (or putting back together) a watch via telekinesis, etc? This book immediately felt like FIRE. I still flip through my “E for Extinction” trade all the time. And to this day Cassandra Nova is a fave villain because of that arc. So fresh, so evilly good. And Quitely only did 10 issues. All burned into my brain. And I got my page! Really the goal was to have at least a couple of the core team members featured prominently, and I’m happy to have Cyclops and Beast here. Definitely got the “slim” in Scott “Slim” Summers with Frank’s rendition :) And also cat Beast! AND newbie Xorn, created for the run. I love how different Quitely’s looks were for all the characters – from each other and from what came before, but all still had a commonality with the uniforms. Pair that with Quitely’s unique stylization and line work. THEN Townsend inks on top?! https://media.tenor.com/keY9zNtLuvEAAAAC/the-god-father-marlon-brando.gif If so inclined, a fun quick 9 minute video released by Marvel a few years ago, talking about this run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09Trl4Kdczk Thanks, y’all, and hope ‘23’s startin’ off RIGHT. I remember this run fondly, when Marvel used great artists to revitalize a book instead of just rebooting it. Awesome pick up!

He spotted the blacks in the first panel so beautifully, perfectly balancing the composition. Love it! This is one of those times I really wisah the art had the lettering drawn o nthe board or at least pasted on, as it would be worth it just o have Jean's funny dialogue in the last panel. Congrats!

Great page from such a great run. His rendition of the Beast was so bold.

Awesome Frank Quitely X-Men page, even more special with unusually bold inks and borders from this talented artist!

GWJR?! That's "green with jealous rage?!" ;) Just relax...calm...there you go Bru-, I mean, E C :)
Glad you dig it! This is one of times in life where I was reading LOTS of comics, and New X-Men was right at the top. Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

With issue one fourteen, they had some very good years
It was a Quitely good year, Morrison worlds
And Scott Summers nights
Jean wears sweaters tight
For the X-Men team
When Tim inked like a dream
When I looked at their run, it was Frank last issue here
It was an Emma good year, Frost city girls
Who loved Xavier
With that Hank McCoy hair
And my claims are done
Art is now twenty one

Ya know, I never really wondered to myself "What would Tim's inks look like on Quitely's pencils" but now that I see it for myself, I have to say I'm a fan! Very nice!!!

The whole page looks fantastic (encapsulated in black) and that top panel is truly remarkable! Great way to kick-off the year!

Congrats on finding such a great Quitely page from New X-Men! I love the lightening effect in the top two panels. It works just as great in black and white as it does in color.

Yeah, man, I didn't note in my description, but the lighting effect in those 2 panels, particularly in that first one, is some sublime stuff. Agree that both B&W and color eachngot their own visual goodness to offer! Thanks!

BOOM! You are definitely NOT going quietly into 2023. Instead, you went Quitely! Sorry, I had to do it lol. I was inspired by your play on the word "Chasm" in your comment on my McG ASM 16 cover. I do love me some clever wordplay. Anyway, congrats on this fantastic bucket list add!

A very very good way the star the new year! Why all the X-Men pages have always "something" special??? Maybe because the artists chosen are always SPECIAL?
I love the using of the chiaroscuro technique in some panel to underline the X.

Ha ha, I could make this case for more than just the X-Men, but I hear ya on why X books could be particularly so! Lotsa differents runs that resonate differently, nay - "special", for us fans.
And completely agree regarding that X on Hank's arm! Oh, that subtle sweetness when it comes to OA :) Thanks, Toni!

Absolutely love FQ's character designs for this run. And the story wasn't half bad either.

Happy new year, K! And this is about as textbook as one can get (fitting, with Xavier's being an institution of fine learning, after all) when it comes to kicking off a new year RIGHT and IN STYLE. FANTASTIC Quitely page, and with Xorn on it?!? Awesomely epic. Frank's issues were among the most memorable in this incredible run, and the fact that he only did ten of them is just as astonishing as the fact that they were 22 years ago now. I, too, flip through issues of this run regularly, and there's no way we're alone in that - and for VERY good reason: this art (and these stories) feel as fresh and timeless now as they did way, way, waaaaay back then. :) Beautiful, incredible feather in the OA cap, sir, and I hope the rest of your '23 brings you as much OA greatness!

Dude, good point regarding still feeling resh and timeless now...I was thinking the same thing last month when I was re-reading the first trade. Thanks, man, and likewise for the '23 year, OA and otherwise!

I'm with you. I also loved the New X-Men run by Frank Quitely. I loved Quitely's unique style and clean, crisp linework on my favorite mutant team. I thought Tim Townsend turned out to be the perfect inker to bring Quitely's style to life as well. Terrific pick-up and a great start to the new year!
