DescriptionClosing out April and my recent string of BP adds with this actual PANTHER cover by the most prolific BP art team ever in Sal Velluto and Bob Almond! Got a splash and a panel page from their run (back to back pages actually!) so now am glad to add a cover as a third!Quick story. A couple weekends ago, took the fam to Bearizona for the first time, which is a wildlife park in northern AZ. One of the attractions there were jaguars, and one of them was a straight up black panther. “Panther” and “jaguar” are essentially interchangeable terms, FYI. Anyway, lol. I saw it and thought about this cover on Anthony’s Comic Book Art site. I had mulled in the past but coincidentally Anthony had a “make offer” show with Bill just 2 days later. So made an offer, it was accepted, and here we are! Simple in that you got the single panther figure with no background, which is fine by me – serves to center the fierce jungle cat! The image was actually used for a “100 Page Monster” issue which celebrated 35 years of BP (see in additional images). It had the standard Priest story, backup reprints of Fantastic Four #52 and 53 (first appearance BP issues), and a story from Jungle Action #8. Was pretty cool in that it hit on some of the keys. Also see this image used for the Panther God/Bast entry in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe - shout out to John Espinoza for finding! Some meticulous Almond inks on this one, and also cool to see those notes to the colorist in the margins :) Social/Sharing |

It's coming right for us! Awesome piece showcasing the literal namesake of the King of Wakanda. Congrats!

Dude, I never heard of this show, but just looked it up, lol. Can definitely see the connection! You know what transformation show I dug from the late '80s? Werewolf. That was a good one. Been a long time since I thought about it, though, so I may have to watch some to push that nostalic button :)
Thanks, M, and all for the comments - always appreciated!

This panther feels very human in form, it's a nice mix of both cat panther (head, tail and paws) and character (most of the body form, arms, legs, backside). Interesting cover and fitting for your collection.

Yeah, man, it's interesting that way. Right away you think "panther" but then it's like "wait...not fully!" Can see that in that right forearm most. Also see M L's comment and my reply! Thanks for the add, James!

Well if you're going to add a Black Panther cover to your collection, you may as well get one that features the fictional character's namesake, right? By the way, does this black panther have a name and is he the Black Panther's black panther? Inquiring black panthers wan... uh... inquiring minds want to know!

Hands down, my favorite artist for Black Panther. His run from the late nineties to early 2000's was must read! Nice one, Kahlil

I loved those 100 page monsters that Marvel did for an all-too-brief period of time, so I remember this cover well. Fantastic pickup!

This is REALLY fantastic, K! You are right to call out the beautiful inks on this (holy moley!), but make no mistake: this drawing is not of "a" panther - this is The Black Panther as perceived by evildoers unfortunate enough to provoke his ire. There are elbows here (and a broad torso) and we're witnessing the "gone, gone, o form of man!" moment of anthropomorphism, where the Panther becomes a force of nature of his own, and woe betide those who encounter his fury! (Did I really just really use "woe betide" in a sentence in public?!?) Sal must have been leaning into the "100 page monster" angle! A great piece with some great storytelling behind it, too! Congrats, K!

Well I can understand the "woe betide" line as you had JUST quoted Etrigan...so...I'll give you a pass ;) And yeah, definitely a more "monstrous" feel to this cover than others, leaning into the occasion, as you say! Thanks for the add, Jason!

Awesome you got this - I had seen it on Anthony's for a while too and honestly thought it was probably only a matter of time before it ended up in your collection. Congrats man!

Striking anthropomorphic depiction of the black panther, that pays homage to that memorable Texeira cover. Great inks by Almond!
