DescriptionI loved Zachary's pencil work on New Mutants (which can be seen in its entirety here) and checked out his web site. He had a cool painting of Kitty Pryde in a snowy forest, with arrows failing to injure her intangible form. I asked him if he still had it; as I expected, he had sold it years ago. Would he have any interest in doing another along those lines? Yes, he had ideas for doing it differently, fifteen years later. Anyone who's watched artists at work will know the importance of references, whether live models or photographs. Baldus gave me an unusually detailed look into his process. Around 2008, he made the first Kitty Pryde painting inspired by the pose of a boxer. In 2016, British cosplayer Lyingcat re-enacted Baldus' original painting for a photo shoot. She became the partial basis for this second version, which blends elements from both references plus Baldus' own imagination. Art imitating life imitating art imitating life or something! On August 21, 2023, Baldus was interviewed by Bill Cox for Comic Art LIVE on YouTube, and this piece was shown and discussed. It was a runner-up in CAF's "Best of 2023" awards in the Commissions category. Social/Sharing |

Great concept and executed really nice to show Kitty's concentration as any loss of it could mean death. It has us on the edge like watching a tightrope walker.

This is a spectacular piece. I love its storybook, mythological, and fairytale qualities. I think the other commissioners would struggle to find a concept that achieves the narrative excellence of this piece with different characters.
