Description

The Commander, by comics legend Bob McLeod! After Herb Trimpe completed the pencils for GI Joe #1, Marvel editors brought in McLeod to ink the cover and interiors to give the first issue a more ‘modern’ look for the 80’s. That first issue is iconic, and McLeod went on to ink several other Joe covers for artists including Trimpe, Wagner, Zeck etc., leaving his stamp on the series.

Since he was one of the very first to draw GI Joe, I decided to ask Bob for an early Cobra Commander, and he delivered! This piece looks like it could be a scene out of the first issue; Cobra Commander, in his classic costume and villainous pose, rallying the troops. Fists raised, I can almost hear the masses of Cobra troopers chanting “Cobraaa!”.

If I get the chance, I will ask Bob to create a companion piece to this with Hawk commanding a team of fist-pumping Joes. Couldn’t be happier with how this one turned out!

The look is classic and McLeod knows just the right finish for the madman with aims for world domination.
