DescriptionWritten by Joëlle Jones and Jamie S. Rich, this is the next-to-last page of the five-part first series. Our title character opens the door to speak to an apparent Avon lady calling. As this issue opens Josie closes in on the truth behind who really wants to end her life as a cheerful housewife, mother, and ruthlessly skilled assassin. Who is really behind the hit? And are they closer to home than she'd like? As this issue ends, there’s enough of a climax to leave a satisfactory conclusion, but there are still enough loose ends that Jones and Rich have left themselves a world to return to. And I for one am very grateful they did just that with a second series. While the first two volumes of the series were published through Dark Horse Comics, a third story arc (titled Lady Killer Ltd. and authored by Jones solo) launched in 2023 as an exclusive to the Zestworld digital comics platform. I still have that one on my “to read” list. I should rectify that soon. In addition to Jones and Rich striking the narrative tone of the time, and Jones the aesthetic of the 1960s, Laura Allred’s colors set the pallet for the story and the era in a notable way all their own (image of published page also included below). A true trifecta of talent and execution. This page is a fall 2023 Comic Art Live pick-up (thanks Rick!), finally scanned and posted. Social/Sharing |

Josie's housewife vocation for today
Come around assassin killer
So Jeffrey says that I want a page
You know I'll get Zestworld a digital reader
Why you want to post your art at night?
I don't want to loosen up tonight
She ain't got Lady friends left to talk to
Nowhere to run Avon calling Joelle
Ms Jones I'd read anything from you
Steady lines and keep it Laura's colors
Why you want to post your art at night? (whoa)
I don't want to lose some sleep tonight

Lady Killer was a cool series. Jones really showed off her talent. Especially love the way she does fabric here. Congrats!

Great pickup! I had my eye on this one. I thought about warning your wife of this new addition, but then I realized, you're the one who should sleep with one eye open...since this is a story about a female domestic housewife assassin. Haha.
Joelle's art is soooooo gooooood!

I always sleep with one eye open. Not a ninja technique, just weird. Like Jack Elam weird. And I fully suspect my wife's "dinner meetings" are really "cleaning appointments." Ha!

Her work is so stylized, yet the figurework is so natural and realistic. Really loose and natural looking postures. My library has the first 2 volumes, so I'm gonna try them out. Sounds like fun!

I picked up a copy of her Oni Press book 12 Reasons Why I Love Her from Joëlle at SDCC somewhere around 2007-2008 along with one of the interior pages as a gift for Stacey. And in either 2009 or 2010 (I can't remember if it dropped in time for SDCC 2009, her and Jamie may have had them that year) I picked up You Have Killed Me, and bought that book and an interior page. And that was the one that hooked me on her work. And she and Jamie were so nice to stand and chat with that year. And then along came Lady Killer, which was You Have Killed Me but made for cable and amped on speed. And although I picked up the books, I never grabbed a page, so very pleaased to finally snag one.

Okay, I just finished reading the second volume of Lady Killer and as I suspected, it was right up my alley! But as always happens in these cases where I discover a series that is already several years old and I love it, the artwork has already long since been spread far and wide. However, I just wanted to give you my thanks, Jeff, for posting this page which not only introduced me to a fun series that is new to me, but also introduced me to the artistic stylings of Joëlle Jones. I was aware of her by name only, until you posted this page. Her style and especially her mastery of the female form are so perfectly suited for a series set in this era and I'm thrilled to be introduced to it. I hope she puts out a compilation of all 3 volumes some day!

Excellent! Always great to find new books that otherwise wouldn't be on one's radar. I believe you mentioned you were checking these out through your local library. If they also have "You Have Killed Me" by Ms. Jones and Jamie Rich, also a good read in the line of a Sam Spade-esque noir story.

Yes, discovering new reads that otherwise wouldn't be on one's radar, especially when you end up really liking them, is always fun. Unfortunately the library does NOT have "You Have Killed Me". The only other Joelle Jones illustrated things they have are 2 out of the 4 Supergirl tpbs, and 2 indy books called "Token" and "Troublemaker", the latter two of which I've reserved and will give a try.
But now I really want one GREAT page from Lady Killer, yet I see that even here on CAF there are barely 25% of the pages and on the defunct Cadence site there are only 4 pages, none of any interest to me. Makes me wonder if Joelle might still own a ton of them or if the rest just got sold to all the collectors who don't post their collections online.

The pickings left on the Cadence site were few and slim at the end. I suspect most of the pages are out there with collectors now, but as you said not displayed online in a gallery somewhere.
