DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #230, teaming Batman with Hourman, adapted from the Ross Andru / Ernie Chan cover of Amazing Spider-Man #183, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.1943 - and Rex Tyler arrives at Bannerman Chemical to discover a fraught Mrs Bannerman, wife of the company's owner, who reports that both her husband and her daughter Beverly have been kidnapped by masked men! Donning his Hourman costume and popping a Miraclo pill, Tyler sets out to find them, following the tyre tracks of the car the captives were taken away in. At the same time, Batman is on the hunt for a group of Bundists who have been involved in the theft of defence materiel, including an experimental new power plant which, if it can be perfected, will be used in new tanks. By separate routes, the two heroes arrive at a disused factory owned by the now-deceased "Emerald Ed" Reilly, father of both Rod and Dannette Reilly - and discover that the factory is not as abandoned as they had suspected! Breaking in, they confront the Bundists who hold the Bannermans captive - and hear a chilling tale. In 1942, a U-Boat smuggled an Axis agent into the US, who brought with him a deadly cargo - the plans for Professor Merson's terrifying War Wheel! The agent, and the local bund, intended to build their very own War Wheel and attack the US from within - but those plans were stymied when Emerald Ed Reilly (who had sympathised with the Nazis, but began to change his mind after Pearl Harbour) refused to supply them with steel from his factories. After Reilly was killed by Night and Fog (in All-Star Squadron #44) the Bundists took over one of his old factories, and began to steal the supplies necessary to construct their own copy of the War Wheel - but a deadline imposed on them by the Third Reich meant that they were only able to build a somewhat smaller version of the terror weapon - and the experimental engine they had stolen required a special fuel, which entailed them kidnapping chemical expert Bannerman (and his daughter, to ensure his cooperation). Threatening to kill their hostages, the Nazis escape, and the heroes realise that the War Wheel has been finished and is now heading for Gotham City to wreak havoc! Both set off to try and stop it, only to find the deadly machine crashing through Gotham's streets, destroying buildings and terrorising citizens. As Batman and Hourman advance on it, a message is broadcast from the War Wheel - if the heroes attempt to interfere, the Bannermans will be killed! Hourman, given his links to the family, initially tries to prevent the Gotham Guardian from launching an attack on the giant mechanism - but afer a brief scuffle, the Man Of The Hour realises that he has to aid Batman no matter what the consequences. The heroes lure the War Wheel away from the most populated areas of the city, and towards the Gotham docks, and the Bundists abandon their mission of terror and concentrate on killing both Batman and Hourman, believing that slaying two American heroes will be a huge propaganda coup. As the battle approaches the docks, Batman formulates a plan, and he and Hourman lead the War Wheel towards the water's edge - but as the heroes back onto a wooden pier, the Bundists realise what the Gotham Guardian's strategem is, and slam on the brakes before the War Wheel can crash through the pier into the dock. Batman's plan has failed! ... but then, from nowhere, the Batmobile appears, driven by Robin, the Boy Wonder, and it slams into the War Wheel, knocking it forward and onto the pier, which splinters, plunging the giant mechanism into the ocean, which floods and immobilises it! As Hourman's Miraclo-fuelled strength rips open the War Wheel so that Batman can capture the small crew of Nazis within it, Robin reveals that he had - on Batman's instructions - been shadowing his partner, surprising and defeating the Bundists, and then freeing their hostages. Although some damage has been done to Gotham, the menace of the War Wheel has been ended, and the Bannermans are safe - and Hourman, Batman and Robin remain on guard against the threat posed by the Nazis, whether abroad or within the US! A new team-up - next issue! Social/Sharing |

No Dr Mid-Nite yet - he'll be in a three-part story, sometime in the next year or so.
