DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #250 (!) teaming Batman with Robin, the former Boy Wonder, adapted from Sal Buscema's cover to Daredevil #77, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.1967 (yes, I know that's after the Golden Age: keep reading) - and with Bruce Wayne semi-retired from the role of Batmna, and out of the country on business, it's Dick (Robin) Grayson who responds to a summons from Gotham's Chief Of Police, where he's introduced to a young woman, Geraldine Robinson, who has a surprising request - can he identify the hero who's wearing Robin's newly-adopted costume, in a photo taken in 1944? Geraldine explains that her father, a freelance photographer, had taken the picture a few days before shipping off to England with the US Army, and had been killed later that year during the invasion of Europe. His wife - Geraldine's mother, who had just discovered that she was pregnant - kept the picture as a momento of her late husband, and when she recently died, Geraldine had found it amongst her effects, and recognised the costume from Robin's recent induction to the JSA, and wonders if he could help her identify the wartime hero who had saved her father's life. Robin is stunned - to the best of his knowledge no other hero had worn the costume, but he promises to investigate and report back if he finds out anything. Leaving police headquarters, he swings across town to visit his (and Batman's) longtime ally, Professor Carter Nichols, and shortly thereafter Nichols' hypnotic powers send Robin spiralling back through time... In 1944, the Batmobile speeds through the streets as Batman responds to radio calls about a super-powered disturbance in Gotham Park - and as on arrival he finds a figure in a peculiar grey uniform decorated with multiple letter P's wielding a gadget which is animating the metal statues in the park, setting them on police officers! Batman leaps into the fray, but a statue of one of Gotham's Civil War generals batters him and sends him crashing to the ground, as the figure calls for the police to send him Green Lantern! Meanwhile, Robin has crossed town riding atop a truck, and disembarks at Gotham Park, rushing to join the battle - and recognises Knodar, the so-called Last Criminal, who in the late 1940s had travelled back from the 25th century to battle Green Lantern on a number of occasions! As Batman recovers, the two heroes charge at Knodar from opposite directions, but are caught by the animated statues - and it becomes obvious to Robin that Knodar has escaped from 25th century justice and travelled back in time again, but overshot his destination to land in 1944, before he first encountered GL. With both Caped Crusaders held captive, all seems lost - until a young photographer jumps forward and snaps a picture! The flashbulb temporarily blinds Knodar, and with his attention distracted Batman and Robin are able to escape! Batman tackles Knodar while Robin gets the photographer to safety, warning him to keep the picture he's just taken safe. When Robin returns to the battle, he finds that Batman has defeated Knodar - but just as Batman is about to ask Robin who he is, Dalmyr (the 25th century law-enforcer from GL #28) arrives from the future to take Knodar back to his own time, shining a beam at Batman which blocks his memory of the event. Before Dalmyr can also zap Robin, Carter Nichols' hypnotic treatment wears off, and Robin finds himself back in 1967 - with an amazing story to tell Geri Robinson about how her father saved Batman, and Robin himself, in 1944! Next time: two vintage villains use science and sorcery to battle Batman and a new guest-star! Social/Sharing |
