DescriptionThis is not a page from Hellboy: The Crooked Man, whose film version is scheduled for release today in the United Kingdom (not sure when it is due in the cinemas in the United States) but the page could be promoted with the standard tagline,“From the creators of…” It also just so happens that it is my one and only page from my all-time second-favourite Hellboy story, just behind Hellboy in Mexico. Yeah, I know neither of those were drawn by Mike Mignola but his fingerprints are all over them even if you did not know he was the writer. This page comes from the lead story, Sullivan’s Reward, of the Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil one-shot. For those unfamiliar with that story it is at its most basic a haunted house morality tale starring Hellboy. It is set in 1960 when Hellboy is called to a small town in Kansas where there have been quite a number of disappearances/killings inside a run-down mansion. The person who has requested Hellboy to investigate is someone called Sullivan – a late middle-aged, myopic, follically-challenged addict, whose avarice will prove to be his downfall. Man, can I relate to all that, although my choice of poison is not alcohol. “[The addiction] is a disease, you know.” The “reward” of the title that Sullivan attains is hilariously poetic, and reminds you of adages such as, “what good is it to gain the world but lose your soul?,” and “when you sup with the devil make sure to bring a long spoon”. I was going to say that I bought this page from Mrs Dona Corben in the last-but-one fixed-price sale on her website but she has said, after experimenting with an auction format and also with delegating the sale of her and her late husband’s artwork to Heritage, that after much collector demand she is going to resume intermittently selling Richard Corben artwork at a fixed price. So I will say that I bought this page from Mrs Dona Corben in the last-but-one ridiculously-underpriced fixed-price sale on her website as the costs from here on in look like they will more accurately reflect market price. I was very lucky to snag this page and it might have partially been because all the other pages in that drop were more eye-catchingly flashy. Hellboy does not feature on this page and it might look a bit flat to the uninitiated. If it had been a film then you can imagine it having a lot more impact. There is a famous1960s-set film called Zabriskie Point which I have not seen except for the climax on YouTube which features a house exploding for real (no CGI to speak of in those days) followed by all manner of everyday consumer items being blown up (apparently as some sort of commentary on the disposability of modern-day life) and you can imagine this page as being as cinematic as that was (the two panels prior to this on the previous page as well as the one panel following it on the next page are all wide panoramic panels resembling the cinema-screen ratio – both those pages are already on CAF in other members’ galleries) with a slow-motion explosion and you can picture the film pausing and stopping for a second or two as coming into shot are the gold coins which were the price of the pitiful souls sacrificed to the evil presence depicted in the oil painting which also hoves into view. “There you go.” My thanks for Mrs Dona Corben for allowing me to purchase this page of striking Richard Corben artwork. Hellboy The Crooked Man is most likely going straight to Video on Demand in the states 10/8. Copies are out there for those who sail the open seas. Yes, those Corben drops were more contested than even the Felix drops and fans would be lucky to get anything.

The new Hellboy has had a very limited-venue release here in the UK so I have not been able to see it. However, the trailer looks creepily atmospheric in spite of what some critics have said. You can achieve a lot with a small budget if you use your imagination. Those Corben drops were a real free-for-all. For anyone interested and reading this shortly after I am posting it they might be interested to know Mrs Corben is getting ready a large sale on her website. Like Charlie Brown coming back on the coach from summer camp and looking at the next tranche queuing up to go I am with great relief going to bow out of joining those scrums for the art – I have done my stint. I wish I could say that it is because I am magnanimously letting others have a fair shake at getting a page; the real reason is that the prices are a bit over my budget at the moment. Good luck to anyone taking part.
