Description

The opening event of the comic festival was something called The Avengers: Uncivil War. Five people who worked in the comics field had each chosen an Avenger (it did not have to be from the main Avengers group and could be from one of the offshoot teams) and would argue the case for them being called the greatest of the Avengers. The audience would then vote for who best deserved this accolade. The five Avengers nominated were: Wonder Man, Deadpool, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Speedball. The creator who spoke on behalf of Captain America was Michael Lark.

When the prospect of getting a convention sketch the following day from Michael Lark occurred to me I had thought of someone from Lazarus as that was his acclaimed creators-owned title but after Michael Lark’s persuasive argument on behalf of Captain America it made sense to revise my earlier choice. Whilst he was drawing this picture of Captain America I engaged him in conversation in which I found out the answers to some questions I had in my mind about him. The reason why he insists on personalising all commissions and sketches is because it makes them more difficult to flip. He had had a bad experience many years ago when some drawings he had done in the belief that they were for a fan were actually for a dealer and were being resold. The comic which he feels is his best work is Gotham Central. Lazarus will return and it will reach a logical conclusion but he is first going to have to get some more issues in the can so that the title can be properly scheduled to come out on a regular basis.

As far as the popular vote on the greatest Avenger went – Michael Lark had me at Captain America but he came only third behind Scarlet Witch (who was represented by his partner, Keli) and the eventual winner who was Speedball. Go figure. Thank you again to Michael Lark for this fantastic drawing.
