Description

1969, Famous Sentinels flying into the sun scene; Neal Adams Pencils and Tom Palmer inks. Signed by Neal Adams.

Here is a famous and historic page from X-Men #59 (1969) featuring a very well known scene from Neal Adams' historic late Silver Age run on the title. It features the resolution of the epic battle with the Sentinels when after Cyclops tricks the giant, mutant-hunting robots into flying into the sun in order to try to end all mutation, they actually end up destroy themselves! During his X-Men run Adams, inked by the great Tom Palmer, broke all the rules of superhero storytelling with his imaginative layouts, angled panels and groundbreaking use of perspective. This is a wonderful example from the run featuring one of its most memorable moments!

While Roy Thomas was the writer of the issue featuring this page, it's been well documented that a young college intern named Chris Claremont was the one who suggested having the Sentinels fly into the sun. This was Claremont's very first contribution to the X-Men. Six years later Claremont would begin writing X-Men starting with #94 and continuing for the next 15 years. This, of course, is one of the most popular and influential runs in the history of comic books. To think it all started with this very page!

I personally heard Chris Claremont in person tell the story of this idea/page during his Marvel bullpen days as an intern, and it always stuck with me. When I saw this page come up later on, it was like destiny!

Yes!! thank you, huge moment in X-Men canon and Marvel Comics history. It's really fun to hear Chris Claremont talk about the Marvel bullpen days when he tells the story about how he came up with this idea as an intern and they took his idea and ran with it! Lucky to have been able to hear him tell the story in person once!

Unbelievably historic, Kavi!  This is truly a moment of pedigreed comics history that will never NOT exist (or be ret-conned out, etc.).  Look at the lineup of talent you have attributed to this page: that's pretty hard to beat - not many other teams do it - and to have scored a page from this run is a major achievement.  So, so, sooo cool, Kavi!  Mega-congrats on this one!

I don't even read X-men but I did read the Adams early run material on the series.  Great stuff!

I loved Adams on X-men and I really loved this image.  So much so that I swiped it and drew it on the cover of a Pink Floyd mix tape I made in the 80s. "Set the Controls for The Heart of the Sun"
