DescriptionThis was a cover to a comic sold at the Marvel Mania theme restaurants in the 90's. Per Dave himself:"I did it for Marvel creative services. It was a cover to a huge mish-mash of current Marvel books. To sell at the now defunct Marvel restaurants" Unfortunately, I haven't been able to track this book down so if anyone has a copy, I would love to see the published cover! Social/Sharing |

One of the best cover designers in the business, even at this relatively early point in his career: clear focal points to provide necessary proportion and balance to the cover, and lovely rendering of all the characters, particularly Spidey and Sabertooth.

The changing of art lines from hard times
The restaurants of my life
Oh, how they fill my pies
The greetings of people in Marvel
The restaurants of my life
Oh, how they fill my thighs
Oh, my promos
Comics followed
Take-out back to my own home
Oh, my starving (food poisoning)
Feel I'm dying, dying
Grease and fat with comic books

Pete was off the market for a while in that era. He let the glutes slide. Ben was out hound dogging it so he was all about dem squats!

What a great eclectic collection of Marvel characters! I love how Ghost Rider on his motorcycle in the distance, and Spidey being up close and doing his web crawling thang. Sabretooth and Cyclops make great book ends, and then having those three characters in panels is cool too. Great layout overall, and of course beautifully drawn! Hope you can find the comic some day, cuz they would look great framed together.

Great early Johnson. I already loved his art so much back when.
And..."Eat your lunch kids, or Sabretooth will (eat you) ! "

Dude, love how this is composed! Strong collage-y movie poster feel that takes some time to pore over so you don't miss anything - love that quality. And really dig how Creed's staring right at the viewer! Congrats!

Very cool promo piece to a comic I want if it exists, love this kind of rare material. When looking up can't find much on it but will keep on my lookout as I love the promo comics. So many more than I ever thought from old Pizza Hut comics in the 90's and Video games to 7-11 and Carl's Jr/Hardee's X-Men comics. There was even some old 3-D mini comics, one featuring Iceman from the 80's I believe that came in some sort of kids combo meal.

Thanks, James! Please let me know if you come across one in the wild!

Marvel needs to find another use for this image. Maybe as a wraparound cover to a "Best of the 1990s" omnibus.
