Description

Red Skull Sketch by Allen Milgrom

I was walking at NYCC when I saw a man sitting in a chair with a suit. I thought that looked really similar to Jim Shooter and decided to walk around and it turns out I was right. Jim and I immediately start talking and catching up. 2 minutes later I hear someone behind me say, "Is that Jesse Simon?" I turn around and it takes me a second to realize it's Al Milgrom. I wasn't use to seeing Al with a mask on. The three of us start chatting (Joe's name came up quite a few times) and they see I have some comics that I plan to shop around if anyone is interested in them. They both want a look but get swamped by fans. I wait around and let them take a look at them, Shooter views the books first going through each other mainly stopping at the timelys and a few DC. We discussed schomburg and how fantastic he was. Then Al wants a look and he goes through each identifying every single artist from the cover art alone. 2 stand out to him, Plastic Man and National Comics. I let them get back to the fans and shop my books around. I got a few offers on the National and Plastic Man but not at the value I was looking for. I thought to myself, Instead of taking the money, let me offer them to Al if he would like them. I go back and we talk and I ask him which one he prefers of the 2. He chooses National Comics and I say it's yours, a gift from me to you. Al offers to pay but I decline saying it's a gift. I ask Al if I can grab the seat next to him to rest for a few minutes. He puts it in his bag and says, "well is there anything I can draw for you?" I say that it's up to him but I prefer Red Skull or Captain America. Now I'm to the left of him slightly behind his shoulder. This in particular reminds me of when I use to watch Joe draw as I would stand to the left of Joe at his drawing table and he would be seated. He starts in the middle of the page and I ask, "Well, what are you drawing?" and Al replies with, "I don't know yet". We start chatting about his son, some fans pass and Jim even jumps into the convo. A few minutes later it seems as if the Red Skull has appeared on the page. I thank Al and I bother him for a photo. The one thing I regret most growing up is not taking more photos and capturing moments, especially with Joe. Don't let that fool you as I generally still dont love photos, but I wasn't going to make the same mistake again with not capturing memories.

Every piece has artwork and story on it, but there is always a story behind the piece of art. This is this piece's story and makes it priceless.

I wasn't able to do that with my grandfather and my memroies with him. To capture delivery detail. That's my reason for writing so in-depth here. The piece is truly a representation of the memory

A piece of art, a treasured memory, all that can be asked for a sketch. Congrats.
