I remember as a kid my grandfather, Joe, handed me the trade paperback with this cover. It immediately captured my attention and I've loved it since. It definitely has a nostalgic feel, great item to have in your collection!
So true! Couldn't have said it better myself.
This is actually by Simon and Kirby from 1955. In 1979 Joe reworked the artwork and design, including drawing a battle scene in the center of the image to further contrast the main figures. So technically this is from the 50's.
This is great! I am trying to do a project with them, hopefully in the not so distant future! Currently I have a project with other A-list Simon and Kirby heroes! Banks did a fantastic job!
Im a big Indy and Harrison Ford fan. This was such a wonderful movie with the addition of Sean, this piece of art only adds to the amazing movie with being equally amazing!
I felt it really captured Joe's spirit. You can feel his inspiration and his love for these characters in the piece.
Looks much better in person, I had the same reaction as you. Excited for the project
yes, Someone else had mentioned the Dating Game. Slightly before my time but I understand the reference. Theyre all putting their best foot foward, thats for sure.
I'm glad you enjoy them. My father wrote the Comic Book Makers with Joe. Check out my other pieces if you haven't already.
Joe always viewed cap as a horror/detective title. Most of the stories are written as "Case files" and stuff like that. Thats some of the reasons why I love the cap comics. I really do love how much is in this quick piece.
That's very true. Joe didn't like to draw cap too muscular. Joe started his career drawing boxing figures and Athletic so he always gave his comic characters those traits which made them more realistic, slim yet still fit. But I do like Al's take on it.
I wasn't able to do that with my grandfather and my memroies with him. To capture delivery detail. That's my reason for writing so in-depth here. The piece is truly a representation of the memory
I was there when Al started that piece. We were talking and he showed me the pencils as we talked. I liked it quite a bit. I came back later and he just finished it and I believe you were picking it up at that moment. Very nice piece, he did exceptionally well with it
I truly believe Joe's 70's work is underrated. People don't give it enough of a chance for it to be appreciated. Jist fantastic stuff
well alot of that was from the imagination of Joe Simon, He created Prez and Jerry and Craig worked under Joe. Prez is truly underappreciated.
thats because the Original Concept/Idea and some pages from Showcase 6 were drawn and created by Joe and Jack during mainline. Joe let jack take it to DC as Jack was in need for a job. Joe never got any credit for any of it until recently where some people are learning of it.
this piece shows Joe's tremendous talents with painting and brushwork that is so often overlooked.
Joe and Jack poured their hearts into boys ranch but it sold like their other titles. Not exceptionally well but good none the less. I think it should've sold better with how much they put into it. Joe and Jack both had a soft spot for body ranch over all other things in their long careers
My first ever page of original art that I bought. 4th and last panel are my favorite l. I got to say I do feel like panel 1 is similar to the hulk
Western is severely underrated. To me, it doesn't get much better than Simon and Kirby's bullseye/boys ranch
Love the story of you sending the email, makes this piece that much more connected to you!
Such a great piece Harry, Always love it when you post Joe's stuff!
I am guessing that this was on Joe's wall. The matting and no use of UV glass indicates that it was displayed before the estate sold it. Can you confirm that it was on Joe's wall? I dont remember it being on his wall. It is a nicely done piece
Beautiful. so moved by how much others were affected by my grandfather. I love the emotion and visual impact this piece has.
Beautiful, this is considered "newer" art for me growing up around golden age style, but this is just fantastic

Ive never sold orignal art, or artwork of any type. I have heard all the stories of people regretting the sale they made of that piece of art. I am still new to collecting so I havent experienced that kind of pain. I understand the pain of having and piece then no longer having it tho, when my grandfather's art was sold, I had no control over it and had no idea of it. Today I go through the sold pages and gaze over pieces I dream of one day owning. Who knows, maybe one day...
Thanks Harry, since I saw it, I thoguht the 1st panel looked like an alternate version of hulk. Just the way it was drawn but I do really like the beauty of the art on this page.
Joe and Jack are both penciller and Joe is the inker. Nice piece that I believe was in my grandfather's collection orignally
no Kirby here, I know some of the Vagabond prince splash and Duke of Broadway stories were all Joe with the exception of Jack''s small drawing here or there on the splash.
The ghoul on the bottom right is definitely my favorite part of this piece. I usually find the monsters/ villains more intresting than the heros.
First time I saw this was in your collection. I knew I liked it from first sight. I still remember that day vividly, seeing all the artwork. Gosh I was lucky! Anyways, I was thinking recently going through other comments of the Simon and Kirby pages, that this piece and some of the Joe solo pieces don't get the attention he desreve. Now not eveything Joe did was gold, but there's a good chick of it that is and dosent get the recognition. I was just wondering, if this was a Simon and Kirby piece, or a Kirby solo piece, would there be more attention paid to it? It's just astounding the lack of attention this piece and other Joe pieces are getting
I am in shock that there's no comments on this piece. I mean, look at it! It's beautiful. The colors are so amazing, truly show Joe's underrated talent of paints
I have one that Joe did for me, more specifically my birthday. It wasn't drawn as well as this one and hienslty I wish it was drawn better. But I will say, I'm glad I have it. He wrote "Cappy Birthday" "with Love" "from your grandfathe" he forgot the r in grandfather so I think it was either late at night or he wasn't as sharp as before. But I still cherish it for the personal aspect. I do remember Joe wasn't happy about Cap "dying"
THIS! I remember we talked about this and how I was in shock when you owned it. Before I got more serious than I am about collecting, I knew of this piece and it cracked me up EVERY single time. The colors, the lettering, the writing and concept. It's literally perfect. I'm glad you have it and it's being safeguarded. Truly an underrated piece and one that needs to be appreciated
I really like the simplicity to this cover. It very simple yet affective. And for some reason my Father likes this cover ALOT too. But it's great! The circle at the bottom gives it an effect like no other. Joe always drew those dolls even in black magic
As you know, I LOVE manhunter and sandman by Joe. He switched the 2 characters and put them in each other's book. Genius. He did well with this sandman and the manhunter he drew
