Day 14. Thirty-one days of Star Wars (2025 edition).

Today is George Lucas' 81st birthday. Thank the Maker! So, what�s this then? Not a Star Wars piece?! It was a failed attempt to make a Flash Gordon film that led George Lucas to create Star Wars.

�I tried to buy the rights to Flash Gordon,� Lucas said in JW Rinzler�s The Making of Star Wars. �I�d been toying with the idea, and that�s when I went, on a whim, to King Features. But I couldn�t get the rights to it. They said they wanted Federico Fellini to direct it, and they wanted 80 percent of the gross, so I said forget it. I could never make any kind of studio deal with that." Lucas went on to make Star Wars drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including comic books, the 1930s Flash Gordon serials, Akira Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress," the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell, and J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". He also incorporated elements from western films and science fiction literature like Frank Herbert's Dune and Harry Harrison's works, as well as historical events like World War II and the Vietnam War.

So for the birthday boy, here's the original art for a 1965 Flash Gordon daily by Dan Barry featuring a space-suited Flash as he investigates an alien cargo ship. Dan Barry had a nearly 40 year run on Flash Gordon, the longest of Flash's many great artists, producing a lot of excellent work in his time on the strip.

Happy 81st Birthday to George Lucas!

Can you imagine the syndicate essentially demanding Federico Fellini be the director for a Science Fiction film focused on a character whose only "success" of any kind wasin the newspaper funny pages? Yeah, that was gonna happen....
