Description

My first piece by Joshua Cassara, and it won’t be my last! Continuing 2021 with my first pickups by artists. Whereas my first 2 posts were more established guys in Coipel and Leonardi this 3rd one features relative newcomer Josh. I do think his profile will continue to grow if he keeps doing the work he’s doing, let alone if he improves. He’s in Marvel’s most recent class of Stormbreakers (referred to in prior years as Young Guns) and when I looked into his work it was pretty clear to me, in both his pin up-y stuff AND sequentials, that his inclusion was well deserved.

This is one of those pieces I just immediately liked when I saw it, then I kinda had to back up and think about why. One, I just liked the pure SNIKTness – I didn’t have a piece like this focusing on Wolverine’s claw pop and I know I’ve liked a lot of those pages when reading comics over the years featuring it. Second, the storytelling. The threat is clear – “You best not get up…bub”. Also like how it’s laid out, in terms of the alternating images inside the 6 equally sized vertical panels – his hand in panels 1/3/5 and camera pullback in 2/4/6 provides a nice balance. Lastly, there’s some subtle techniques that bring out nice textures. Love the hatch-y detail on that stubbly big chinned Wolvie in the last panel, and there’s some nice tonal work throughout. The combination of his lines, tones, and the published colors (at least on this series) really ups the textural quality. This particular page of his isn’t the best example (hence my wanting more work from Josh!) but it’s there. Great line in panel 5, too - "Healing and hurting can be one and the same". For being the rough and rugged resident member of the X-Men he really can throw down some nuggets, can't he?! I mean, he IS an elder to basically...everyone :)

And Josh threw in a nice surprise with the page – see in additional images. Much appreciated, man! And as far as more art goes…”I’ll be back” :)

Snikt!  Snakt!  This is some great artistic storytelling right here. Fantastic images of Wolverine, and Cassara makes a point of illustrating that there is a bloody & painful toll to popping and retracting his claws like that.  I think we sometimes forget that.  Wolvy heals, but he still feels pain.  Cassara has definitely earned his status as a Stormbreaker.

Gotta like that differentiation of sound between the claw release and claw retraction - SNIKT vs SNAKT :)  Nice catch regarding that blood and debris kind of spatter - rendered nicely by Cassara, who as you say, has earned his status as a real up and comer.  Your observation reminds me of the first X-Men film where Rogue asks Logan if it hurts when his claws come out.  Logan's response - "every time".  Thanks, Paul, and all, for the comments!

Yep! We can all hear the sound effects of this page in our heads simply by looking at the images. No surprise that Marvel chose to publish them on the respective panels. Seems like Cassara is causing quite a stir these days.

I never liked Marvel's habit of labeling the artists they want to promote, and because "Young Guns" is a term that had been used in the sports world for a long time, I could deal with it. But "Stormbreakers"??? The cheese is just dripping from my monitor. But I digress! I've never heard of this artist, and as you mention yourself in the description, there's not a lot ot go on in order to determine what I think about his work, but judging from the textures he created with the crosshatching in the final panel alone, I'm certainly interested in seeing more. Definitely a good start!

"Stormbreakers"...ooey gooey cheesy goodness ;)  I don't know if I ever liked or disliked Marvel's "hot new artists" promotion per se but I did appreciate really digging into a few artists who I wasn't familiar with as a result of their inclusion.  Glad you like, Ruben, and as you say - good start.  And I think a good start of a nice long run if he keeps doing what he's doing.  Check out more of his stuff - I think you'll dig it.  Thanks for the add, bud, as always!

Oh, yeah. It could just be 6 panels of the claws snikting in and out like he was fidgeting while waiting in line, and I would love it if it was drawn like that. The blood spray is something simple yet so strong, and with the wonderful inking and ink wash (?), the page really speaks to me, too. Even the veiny forearms, and how you can see it under the cloth is such a nice detail. I'm putting this artist on the list. Cool stuff, Kahlil. Congrats!

Ha ha, can totally see that fidgeting in line - snikt...snakt...snikt...snakt :)  That blood and debris spray really is done well as are the inks.  Good callout on them veiny forearms - makes sense they're there with all that claw popping!  Glad you're adding Cassara on the list of artists to look into - just make sure to check with me first before buying any anything, just in case I may want said piece or pieces ;)  Appreciate the comments, J!

Writers and artists talk about story beats as if a narrative is alive. This page is ALIVE, man. I can hear the beats of its heart as my eye slowly traces along from one panel to the next. And I think this metaphor is especially appropriate with the content of the page's story. There is life here on 2-dimensions. Totally worthy to be a part of your already most impressive art collection. Thank you for sharing this with us, K!

Love the insight, Ryan, and I definitely agree.  There's definitely a strong pulse to this sequence as you move through it.  Appreciate the great (and unique!) comments, as always!

This is such a beautiful page.  The art is exquisite and we get to see a novel use of Wolverine's claws.  What makes Logan the chracter he is is his detemrination about when to use those claws and in what context.  A superb page!  Congratulations!
