DescriptionHere’s the 2nd of 3 Dike Ruan posts today – a killer action page from his recent run on Shang-Chi (SC)! If you haven’t checked out the series I’d recommend it, if nothing else than to check Dike’s art out. Lotsa great action sequences and this page is one of the best examples IMO – no bias :) This is also my first piece of SC art!First, gotta have SC in action, and I get both a kick AND a punch with this one :) Also a nice bonus having SC’s long lost siblings introduced in this series, Brother Sabre and Sister Dagger, fighting alongside him. Second, I like the creature design. There’s something creepy cool about the human arms! Third, lot of artistic techniques on display, including the speed lines around SC’s punch, the white and black spatter speckled throughout, and the nice ink wash. I’ve loved inspecting it all with board in hand. Lastly, a great flow down the page highlighted by that panel breaking SC right hook – the MOKF dishing out some real hurt! Hope y’all like, and again, check out Dike’s work if you haven’t – I definitely will be following his stuff from here on out! Social/Sharing |

What does it say about me, that I generally don't like Manga art, but I do quite like this art? Perhaps it's the fact that it isn't quite pure Manga, rather a Manga and American comic art symbiosis? It's he those quick action liness are done that I love the most, as in panel 1. Very interesting, for sure. I won't read it, but I will check out the issue to see more of the art. Keep expanding your artistic horizons, Kahlil!

To me.. it feels less like manga and more like Hong Kong comics (think Jademan). Love the action, the effects, and the inks. Congrats on the pick up KG!!

Yes! Man, I forgot about Jademan Comics. As a kid in Chicago my dad used to bring some of those back for me, starting with that special that introduced the 4 stories - Drunken Fist, Force of Buddha's Palm, etc. I gotta look into reading those again! Wonder if the art's out there somewhere? If so, I'm sure pretty tough to get. In any case, I'd be fine flipping through and just looking at those books again. Thanks, Ruben and duke, for the reminder! And for adding more to my liking of this piece :) Definitely is a nice mix of Asian and American comic styles!

Man, this must be INCREDIBLE in person. Beautiful artistic design and technique. This is the kind of page that I love without knowing anything about the characters, plot, etc. But having you explain what's going on helps to appreciate it even more. Thanks for that, and congrats!

Y'know, your point around loving a page without knowing anything about it got me thinking...probably one of the best endorsements for OA, particularly for a panel page, that you can give. Just purely loving the art itself. No nostalgia, no knowledge of a story let alone liking of said story. Lucky for me I've got both squarely checked here :) Thanks, Paul, and all, for the comments!

Good heavens! If Deathlok was the astronaut, this is the stone cold killer (and, as if your Deathlok wasn’t compelling enough, proof positive that I absolutely need to look into more of Dike’s work). Good grief what a piece. I don’t know where to start with this one, but luckily you did the heavy lifting in your excellent description. So many great techniques and disciplines coming to play in this... Much like the smorgasbord of power and grace that Shang-Chi possesses himself... Incredible piece, K! Serious congrats!

Dike's work connected me to Shang-Chi for the first time, and it quickly became one of the titles I read first from my pull list, right up there with the current Thor run (and that's high praise!). This was one of the pages I remember thinking, "this is on the shortlist of pages I'd want." What I'm saying is, you have good taste! Congrats!

Thanks, Casey! I'm right there with you regarding first connecting to Shang-Chi with this run. Because I'm a big Mike Zeck fan I went back and looked at some of his work on the old MOKF series but this is the first run I've read start to finish. Obviously Dike's art was a big part of that. This was page was definitely on my shortlist, too. I missed out on a few from earlier issues but nabbing this more than made up for that. And congrats on your KILLER Ruan Spidey get!
