Description20th new artist add of 2021 – Pere Perez! Noticed his work recently on Spider-Woman, so I went to his dealer’s site (Black Diamond), and this splash was the one that immediately jumped out at me. So, now it’s mine :)So much ink on the board, and executed so strategically. Easier said than done with 4 different fight images going on. Start out farther away with her flipping a dude, zoom in for a stout kick, go back out for a double venom blast, and close it out by going back in for the choke hold. Some seriously good action scene storytelling there, and really enhanced by the lighting and shadow effects. Also love how that full face front shot of her is right in the middle of the page. I obviously liked it seeing it online but like it even more now that it’s in hand. What a way to open the issue up! Thanks, Pere, and Miles at Black Diamond! Social/Sharing |

Agree with all your comments. Impressive choreography on the page and deftly framed with black.

Almost first among the Gearon's rabid fan base... damn. What an exquisite piece with gothic lighting. It takes brilliance to even imagine a scene like this, much less conjure it up and deliver onto paper! Congratz, my man.

Exactly what I was thinking, Steve. And Marcus's point on having the scene in darkness absolutely does up the drama factor! Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

Great fight sequence montage and nice lighting technique! I love shadow heavy, high contrast work. Shocking, I know!

You got your money's worth on ink alone, the great images aren't bad either! Congrats - this is a stunner!

A splashy montage of spider-woman and her war on crime! Perez has her operating in darkness for a more operatic presentation to glue all these fight images together! Every strike is shown with the immediate impact.

I'm a sucker for dark blacks giving way to expert hatchwork as it fades into the white of the blast lighting. Pepe killed it here! Congrats, man!

Lol, me too! An effective technique, and looks that much better when in hand and looking at it up close! Definitely the case with Pere's take here :) Thanks, E!

Pere is a master of fight choreography. He is a martial artist himself, and also a heck of a nice guy. This page an is awesome example of his work. It's dark, but it shows you enough to make the storytelling clear.

Wow, I didn't know he was a martial artist himself - I'd have to think that helps with him drawing these scenes. And it's always cool knowing when artists are good dudes - I do hope to meet him one day. Thanks for the add, Travis!

Heavy black covers are just the best. Especially in the hands of artists who know how to manipulate that space.

Yeah I can totally see how this splash would jump out at you. I'm a sucker for full page images like this that capture a bunch of battle vignettes, and what amazing inking! Plus, I know a lot of artists who would fudge on the venom blasts, knowing they could be digitally added in later on, but not this guy! Truly a beautiful piece!

Yup, you got just a few of these battle vignette pages yourself, Paul :) And word up - no skimpin' here! Thanks, man!

THWAP! THUNK! FWOOSH! Gnrrrughhh...Such an amazing action page need a little bit of comment onomatopoeia, imo. I so dig these kind of negative, no-panel style pages. It just looks so good with all that lovely ink. And the spiders everywhere is a great touch. I didn't know the artist before, but I do now. Really nice work. Congrats!

Mayhaps I get an overlay so we can see your perfect sound effects right on the page! I get why you felt compelled to give me some onomatopoeia ("you know, I've always liked that word. I so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence" to paraphrase Kill Bill's Elle Driver)...the butt kicking here's just asking for some. Thanks, J!

Very cool how the artist is able to effectively show the dark costume against the dark background. Makes for a stunning page!

What a way to start off your Pere Perez gallery, K! I'm a huge fan of "no panel multi panel" pages, and this one is incredibly sweet; I distinctly remember this one from reading the issue. The manga influence flies off the board here, from the facial expression (and blood / sweat / tears) in panel 2's close-up face kick, to the execution of the venom blast of panel 3, to the choke hold in panel 4... the whole thing is steeped in unfettered energy and executed in a brilliant high octane style. Panel 4 is the money shot for me here, with the gorgeous and dramatic shading on Jess's hair and face, musculature and pose of her left arm, and perfect placement of the spider in the middle of the dude's forehead. Wicked cool piece, K - what a pick up! Great score!

Henchmen. They always question.
Making weird noises for attention.
About the mansion.
They got a whole base for protection.
What?

Now that you mention.
What direction?
Is John going in this section?
Appreciate his predilection.
For comments that warrant inspection.
Huh?

WHOA! Nothing better than a fully inked page, except when you can also throw in such a dynamic layout on top of that. Simply amazing piece.
