DescriptionLast post o’ 2021! Last week I posted a commission as kind of a capper on my getting back into commissions in 2021, particularly commissions from newer artists. This week, I’m sticking with the new artist theme, but a published example where I literally did a goofy jumping “booyah!” fist pump when I realized I got it – a Black Panther and Storm cover by Joshua Cassara!Josh was one of the artists that I really dug into more at the beginning of the year and have been following since. His star continues to shine brighter and deservedly so. He really can do everything from the storytelling to the pin up-y stuff. I picked up my first piece by him exactly a year ago, an X-Force page featuring Wolverine ( https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1700694) and have been waiting since to find that right pin up-y piece and here ‘tis! Lucky for me the person that beat me to the punch as far as picking this up decided to back out so I jumped RIGHT in. On to the piece! Marvel had the members of their recent Stormbreakers class (new talent that Marvel highlights – used to be called Young Guns) do “couples” variant covers and Cassara got T’Challa and Ororo and I absolutely dug it right when I saw it. Love that their facing looking right at each other, and with their poses, it’s almost like a dance. Feels like there’s a lot of power and energy to the image while also being a softer moment, and T’Challa’s left hand being gently around Ororo’s back helps that. Great inks and ink detailing, and as usual with Josh, got them great subtle grey tones throughout. Overall just really love his animated style paired with the more realistic rendering. And ain’t it cool how Storm’s hair blends in with the cloudy mist swirling around them?! Lastly, as per usual, Josh threw in a sketch of OG Wolvie (see in additional images) – thanks again, man! Hope y’all like, and hope y’all have a happy new year start to 2022! Social/Sharing |

They're dancing, they're fighting, they are together in fire. Just a beautiful, sharp look at the essence of what they can be together. Awesome piece.

Totally agree, M - I like the way you worded it! And John Espinoza with some additional on the "dual nature" of this piece - dig his take as well! Thanks, gents, and all, for the comments, as always!

How nice is it to have Black Panther and Storm on a cover like that. It's equal part adversarial and romantic tension. Do I want to smack you or do I want to kiss you? Maybe mix in both? That's amore.

Captivating pose and art piece, love the opposing composition between these two dynamic heroes. Well made and great find, congrats!

Dance indeed. While T’Challa gently holds Ororo on her back, Storm provides the electricity.

Are they going to kiss each other or kill each other? For some couples, it's a fine line between the two. Believe you me. Awesome cover!

Are we sure, we're supposed to be looking at this? It's kind of an intimate moment where all their sexual tension is creating thunderstorms and cracking open the skies.

"Sweet, nourishing gruel!" This piece sports a multitude of amazing inking techniques and is a nice follow up to that Wolverine page you got earlier this year. This is bangin', in more ways than one!

Man...your patience was well rewarded with this piece in terms of characters! Even if he were taking commissions, I don't think you could've got a more tailor-made-for-Kahlil piece from Josh! Absolutely love this stunner...congrats, brother!

Tempestuous! Beautiful penwork here creates all sorts of textures and shadings to pop that central image, and I love the balance of the piece, starting with the white clouds at the bottom, working its way up through the grays of the middle, to arrive at the starry black top of the piece (with Storm's lightning as the focal point). Absolutely awesome. With the placement of T'Challa's hand, claws out, on Storm's back (and the not quite tender, yet exceedingly dangerous vibe that gives off) it makes me think of the Frank Miller cover for his Daredevil Visionaries #2 trade (with DD and Elektra in each others' very intense and much-less-than-tender embraces). A great score, K (and the wicked cool bonus pin-up is a great gesture on Josh's part - how awesome of him to do that)! Congrats, and here's to a fantastic 2022 that sees your gallery continue to grow in leaps and bounds!

Great points as always, Jason! After reading I looked a little more at the background balance, and I totally agree. And tempestuous is the right word for sure...same word that comes to mind with the Miller DD Visionaries vol 2 trade cover! I didn't make that connection at all, even though I got volumes 1 and 2 here on the bookshelf, but totally see it! Got that same kind of tension. Thanks for the add, man, and I look forward to seeing what you got coming in '22!

I knew whose collection this belonged in as soon as I saw it. Awesome addition and absolutely love Josh Cassara's work. And isn't it awesome how he throws in a head sketch for us collectors? It likely doesn't take him too long to include but it's such a fantastic gesture. Congrats Khalil!

You and me, too, man...we knew where this piece should go ;) It's funny, I note in my description, I was actually 2nd in line. I contacted Josh as quick a I could and there were 4 of us - I was #2. But, #1 decided to pass, and now it's home! And yes - SUH-WEET how we throws in the sketch with buys. I know we all appreciate it. Thanks, T!

The most important thing is to NOT go to bed mad, so whatever it takes to work out the tensions and disagreements of the day ... Haha, I actually have no idea if they are fighting or having a passionate moment, but whatever it is, I gotta say ... Joshua Cassara for the win!!! Just a beautiful piece, and a fantastic way to end the year.

ahh i can feel the dynamic energy on this cover. Cassara always puts together a great package for his fans/collectors too it seems as I can't recall anyone not getting something bonus from him as well that I've seen posted/shared. Nice pickup man!

When they met, the sparks flew...The lightning electrifying this cover is very fitting. I dig the balance between the characters, too. A warrior dance between equals and lovers, with claws out and powers flaring. Booyah, indeed! ;) And I love that Trimpe Wolvie add-on. Congrats!

Thanks, man, I try to close CAF years out with a BANG posting, or in this case, maybe a BOLT posting?! Close but naw, that's stretching a bit :) A power couple, indeed! Pretty clear when looking at the image and I definitely dug that about it. And yes - check out Cassara's work. I think his profile's only going to grow and grow!

This piece is worth two comments from me lol. I just love how it seems that Cassara makes it a personal challenge to make a new "quintessential" image of his subjects when he tackles a cover or splash. Like he wants his work to be the new best example of a character that becomes the new go to image for articles, wikis, and more. This cover is certainly that good.

But I hear ya, man. "How can I rock this character MY way?!" I do think Josh challenges himself like that and it shows. Thanks for the add, Kevin, or adds, rather :)
