Description21st new artist added to the collection in 2022 with this sublime cover by Peach Momoko!Peach really has blown up in the last couple years, with good reason. A big part of that is her refreshingly unique Japanese spin on various Marvel heroes through her cover work, and overall, she’s just a straight SKILLED artist. I had to find the right piece, and actually missed on a couple, which was OK, as this one hit perfectly for me. Sam Wilson aka Falcon aka Cap gettin’ that full bleed Momoko treatment! I love how Sam’s centered and faced forward, and everything emanates out from there. There’s this strong sense of movement with the appearance of a constant flowing of lines and colors – not easy to pull off. You can see the gradients of blues, greys, as well as the more distinct shapes vs the amorphous ones – see his wings on left vs right as an example of the latter. And lots of subtle but deliberate execution – on the bottom right see the feathered shapes in blue, vs a couple distinct red feathers on left and right. I whip the portfolio this piece is in out a lot, just to stare. I attended NYCC for the first time this year and brought the piece along, knowing Peach was going to be there. Was awesome as we took a pic and I got a chance to chat with her and her husband for a couple minutes. Hope y’all like and are all having a nice holiday season! Social/Sharing |

If you took the photo with the live on you will notice that he is actually looking down and shaking his head. He can't believe he has to go to a Latverian prison and talk to Deadpool.

I really like the water based paint she used here. I hesitate to use the term "watercolors" only because I'm not positive she uses traditional watercolors, as the pinks in particular look like a slightly different medium than usual. Either way, the style and medium fit well together and the left wing dissipating into nothingness juxtaposes against the right wing very nicely. I also like that she went more towards symbolism by leaving out Sam's arms. A nice way to end the year!

Yeah, I mulled listing media type as "mixed media" vs "paint - watercolor" for the points you make. But I know watercolor is a big part, so just went that way! And couldn't agree more about the juxtaposition.
Thanks Ruben, and all, for the comments! I got one more piece to add in 2022 to get to 22 new artists in the colleccion for the year so stay tuned!

The way she used color is magnificent. As you said, the motion she created from her style of application is top notch. And I really dig both those amazing drop shadows to lift the image, and how she seems to use the red to maybe allude to blood spatters and his soldiers nature. So much to enjoy here, and it's great you all got to chat. Big congrats, Kahlil!

That has some wicked eye appeal! Momoko's work is hit-or-miss for me but I'm really liking the style on this one! So glad we're going to hang out in 2023 so I can see this with my own two eyes. :D

Yeah, I'd agree, Hit or miss, but sometimes it's a BIG hit. Outta the proverbial park. Maybe like this one? ZERO bias ;) Thanks, Ed, and yes, we'll get that OA hang on the docket!

It's been wonderful to see Peach blow up the way she has. This amazing variant cover shows why her work is in such high demand. Congratulations, my friend!

You chose a great Momoko for your first example! She has so many winning styles, but this is one of my favorites. She's another of those artists who has a great rendition (or three) of everyone in the Marvel universe. Congrats, K!

I got my Peach art in a cover (oh, yeah, shit)
I have a need for Marvel manga (that's that shit)
I flew to see her in the North, yeah (badass bitch)
I get it signed right from the source, yeah (yeah, that's it)
And I see you (oh), the Cap we believe in (in), it's the feathers and your skin
I wanna wrap mylars around you, baby, never let you go, oh
And I say, oh, there's nothing like her brush
It's those paint wings lift me up, yeah
And I'll drip right here with your gradients

Thanks, Marcus - I'm gonna be singing these lines for the next couple days, no doubt :)

I immediately thought of these 2:
Street Fighter - 1994// M. Bison (Raul Julia) - Game Over - YouTube
:)
Thanks for the comments, man!

This cover is 'Peach Perfect!' Sorry, I couldn't help doing a musical joke. But wow, dude, this is a phenomenal watercolor masterpiece! Such a unique and stylistically interesting interpretation of Falcon. I'm lovin' me some Peach, and I need to get one for myself!

Musical reference from you, man...yeah...I get why you had to go there ;)
And yes, join the Peach Perfect club! Her covers go pretty quick but she's also pretty prolific, too, so you definitely got some opportunities. Looking forward to seeing what you settle on! Thanks, Paul!

Wow, that is one awesome looking Falcon piece. I always thought a Peach piece would be nice to own. This one fits the bill and then some. The break pattern imagery with the wings is stunning.

Man, THAT is a stunner right there. Gorgeous colors, but what a striking execution. I find the right half of the piece the most compelling; with a more standard "comic book pop sensibility" of color and imagery on the left (feathers like fire! sky blue background! bordered by healthy leaves on the bottom!) something... changes on the right half. The leaves become like tendrils, the blue fades to black, fire becomes smoke (and blood droplets?)... even Sam's star emblem has blood red patches... Since Robert Morales's and Kyle Baker's brilliant mini-series, I feel that the word 'Truth' carries more weight in the context of Captain America (especially as a title: 'Symbol of Truth') and can't help but feel that Peach captures Sam as more phoenix than Falcon here, rising from the ashes and overcoming injustices that have occurred before. I -love- Sam as Captain America, and this incredible piece really plumbs the depths of this character's strength and the legacy of Captain America (as well as what that really means). Titanic piece, K, and a great choice for Best of 2022, right here... Mega-congrats, sir!

Great observations and subsequent comments as per usual, Jason - much appreciated! As per usual :)
Glad you dig it as much as you do. And saw things I didn't! Definitely one of the best things about OA is what we all individually see and take from pieces. From one fellow Sam fan to another, mega-thanks, sir!

Glad you like, man! Others have, too! This was picked up from me last month to be featured in the next stop in the traveling Marvel exhibit, leaving the States (Charlotte was last stop) and opening in Europe in Basel, Switzerland! Pretty cool!
