DescriptionIts common knowledge among comic art fans that Esad Ribic is an artist virtually without peer in the industry, but perhaps less known is his ability to deliver on almost any character request from any corner of pop culture and deliver it spectacularly. And honestly looking at this I probably underestimated his ability. Instead of going for my usual request of Rocket, I opted for one if my favorite villains in comics, Thaal Sinestro. It wasn't completely out of a faith lacking however, Esad is simply so good at human figures that I felt it'd be a waste not to own an example of his proficiency. Looking at this I have ZERO regrets. The photo doesn't do this justice, but the trained eye can still see the absolute masterful color work that shows beneath a seemingly simple portrait. The subtle color variance of his blackclad left bicep, reflecting the yellow hue of his ring. The cool, near purple toned gray used to cloak his collar in shadow. The muted, almost human-like complexion of his skin, which only makes the bright pink of his illuminated maw shine more. Sinestro has been drawn many ways by many artists, over many years m but there's so much lying below the surface of Ribics depiction of his face, it puts many of them to shame. His eyes pierce the viewers soul beneath his furrowed brow. His pursed mouth is an enigma, and his normally slicked back hair is slightly windswept out of form. Is he enraged in the midst of battle? Determined as he rises from a fallen state? Reminiscing on his many fateful acts of evil, betrayal and even heroism? Planning a grand scheme? Or is be fearful of something he is about to face? The beauty of Sinestro is that you never know what he has in store beneath his unassuming, almost gentlemanly appearance. And thats ultimately why I appreciate this work so much. Ribic doesn't simply draw the characters, he captures their essence. The level of subtlety eclipses the technical skill present here. This is almost like a quintessential depiction of this character. Many ways to interpret what's there, but what isn't in question is Sinestros might. As you can probably tell I'm ecstatic to own this. There were plenty of misadventures in the process of acquiring this, at no fault of the art rep, but none of it matters. Even better is I was under the impression initially this would be 8x10 but I ended up with a 12x16. If you ask me this belongs in a museum. But for now my apartment will do just fine. This Ribic delivers on a dramatic moment as Sinestro's confidence is made very relatable through the colorwork. The glow allows us to see him more like us than a red alien by allowing his facial expression to come through.
