Description

We all have our mental checklist of artists who we would love to add to our collection, but sometimes it isn’t always clear what exactly we would want from said creator. For me that was the case with Mike Allred. I have loved his art style for years but some of the things I love the most have been a bit out of reach. Well the stars aligned at the right time for me to be able to pick up this cover. Planet of the Apes has been one of my favorite films (and franchise) for years. I especially love all of the original older films. Mike did a series of variant covers for the Ursus miniseries that Boom released awhile back. One thing I loved about the series is that one thing it does is help bridge the gap between the first two films and shows what General Ursus (who was introduced in the 2nd film “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”) was up to during the events of the first film. This cover does the same thing as the silhouettes along the bottom show the crashes ship, and General Taylor and his crew as they meet up with animalistic humans. All of this beneath a striking image of General Ursus! I am beyond thrilled to be able to add both a beautiful example of Mike work but also a piece that helps honor my love for The Planet of the Apes franchise!

I thought love was only true in Monkee tails
Meant for someone else, no art for me
Boom! was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
No enjoyment thwarted all of my dreams

Then I saw Ursus, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in this find
Monkey love, mmmmm
I'm a believer, I bought the cover 'cuz I tried

I thought Apes was more or less my everything
Seems the more I gave the less the art
What's the use in tryin'
What can you attain?
When I needed Allred, I refrained

Then I saw Ursus, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt monkey shines
Apes in love
Zira and Taylor, I bought the cover 'cuz I tried

I am VERY MUCH in the minority in that I am not typically a fan of MIke Allred's work. I can appreciate WHY so many love it, but it just isn't my cup of tea. But THIS!?!?! WOW! This cover is amazing. What an amazing piece of art. Plus, like you, I have long been a fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise. So all in all, you have what I would consider a grail piece. Congrats on the amazing pick up. (I am almost embarassed to post this lame comment after the hall-of-fame level comment by Marcus Wei)

No I get it, Allred might not be for everyone, but I do tend to love his style. It was interesting because in this case, I don't think it's necessarily identifiable at first glance as an Allred piece but for it was a perfect Apes piece that happens to also be drawn by Mike so even though I was interested in adding something more in line with his signature pieces, I couldn't help myself with this one. It's just a stunner & just fits the tone so well! I love the 70's campy nature of the silhouettes, the perfect icing on the cake for me here. Thanks for the kind words, I was definitely floored when I was able to get this one in hand and appreciate it up close!

Allred continues to amaze me with what he can do. This is a fabulous piece, and the silhouettes at the bottom were a brilliant touch.

Interesting piece... way more realistic than what I'm used to seeing with Allred, but still distinctively his - especially with the inking. Love the negative space figures at the bottom. Congrats!
