DescriptionI loved this poster and it hung on my wall even though I was already 20 when it came out. I didn't mind the other kids in college knowing I was a rabid Marvel fan. This was the pretties painting Marvel had produced and Doctor Strange was the Defenders to me and, as most of you know, I loved the Defenders. I don't know why I didn't mobilize to buy one of the many Defender covers that have been going up but I missed that boat on those and didn't want to miss this one too. I panicked a bit when this showed up on HA at the same time as the Starlin Rampaging Hulk painting. I wanted them both desperately, but for different reasons. Starlin went first and once it got over 90K to win it I pulled out of the race. I feared this would do the same but it didn't quite get there so I was thrilled to win it. Now I need to consign a load to pay for it. Lol -Here is what HA has to say:Kevin Nowlan Doctor Strange Poster Painting Original Art (Marvel, 1983). The Sorcerer Supreme at work! Doctor Strange has been shrouded in mystery since his first appearance in 1963. With his recent "Death" in the comics and integral role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including the new Spider-Man movie and his sequel, Multiverse of Madness), the Master of the Mystic Arts is more popular than ever! This huge painting is an iconic look at Strange -- an impressive piece created for a truly magical poster. Ink and oil on illustration board with an image area of 24.5" x 33". Some of the ink colors have faded from their original vibrancy, especially at the bottom. Signed in the lower right. In Very Good condition. Social/Sharing |

Oh cool, you got this one. Was actually tracking it to see where it would end. Talked to a few people who also went after it. Glad you were able to outlast all of them. I know it HAD to go to either a big Nowlan fan or a Doctor Strange/Defenders fan. Must be truly impressive in person. Congrats buddy!

This was not an image I knew before the auction but loved it at first sight. Congratulations on what has to be one of the finest Nowlan examples there is.

The spindly legs and and fingers add to the supernatural look and energy of the piece! Definitely a trademark Nowlan touch with the exquisite details.

I was surprised at first how different it looks from the actual poster but read the description about the (sad) colors fading.
That being said, it remains one of the most spectacular Nowlan piece out there (with his "Conjuring Clea" print), certainly one of the best posters of that era (and they were all great).
Major addition and congrats.

Really great piece. Given its size it must be so impressive in hand. It's got those "Nowlan Knees" I would be able to spot anywhere. He's one of the finest and most underrated artists of the last several decades. Congratulations.

One of the most beautiful pieces of comic art I've seen surface in quite a while--very happy to hear that it's gone to an appreciative and loving home. Nowlan has such a singular style--and one that I associate with the more adult sensibilities of the 1980s, his characters often look so cool and detached. As a kid his artwork scared me a little--it always felt mature!

This Nowlan has found it's way home. I had you as the Starlin buyer but can't say I am surprised with this purchase as it fits your collection perfectly. Congrats Kirk, thanks for sharing!

Beautiful piece! Would it be completely insane to commission Nowlan to go in and repaint the bottom? He hasn't lost a step artistically. Gorgeous either way!
