Description

When I was in Jr. High I walked into a liquor store and picked up this issue of Rampaging Hulk and was in awe of this cover. I said to my brother "I am going to own this piece of art someday". As fate would have it the 1st SDCC I went to in 1980 an art dealer had this piece and I bought it for $300. I have no idea where or how I got that much $ as a teenager but it was the 1st major piece of art I have ever purchased. Thus was born my art collecting! Thank you Jim Starlin for creating this piece and this obsession.
I have been told that this is Starlin's favorite cover from this run, but not from Starlin himself. I can see why.

WHAT???  No fricking way!  You've been sitting on this since 1980 and just now sharing?  You dog!  Had the same impact on me when I first saw the mag (except for that whole "I'm gonna own this someday" bit).  Honestly one of my favorite Starlin images ever.  I'm almost tempted to jump in my car right now and make the 5-6 hour drive down there just to see it in person.  LOL!  So jealous that you've been able to enjoy this for almost 50 years.  May you continue doing so for many years to come.

Wow - that's incredible!  I loved the painted covers that Starlin would do occasionally and his Hulk was always intense!  I just wish I had the foresight to start collecting original art in Junior High!

The prestige of these magazines was in no small part the painted covers.  Even with Hulk and Namor, Starlin uses the 1977 popular cosmic starfield background.  The figures and colors have such a felt texture to the touch!

Wonderful story, Dirk. That's the kind of thing that keeps bringing me back to CAF. I also recall that cover vividly, as a comic that my brother bought. I was transfixed by the extraordinary colour contrasts and the luminous Green of the Hulk. His sneer as he gazes towards the figure of Namor is perfect. You just know that a titanic contest is on the way, if only you heed the magazine's plea: "Buy Me... Buy Me!".
