DescriptionOne of the earliest books I ever bought was the Marvel Try Out book. What was cool about it was that it was book the same size as original art and had pages you could ink, draw and color. This splash is the first splash in the book and is used several times - in various stages of the art process that the book helps teach. Here was an opportunity to test yourself as a Marvel artist. As a young teen - it was irresistible.Admittedly, this page didn't jump out at me until the day before the live auction, but when I saw it - it was clear to me that it was a good fit in my collection and I needed to try for it. The confusing part is that it looks like a regular splash and has credits on it - but those credits are not real. The art is by Romita Jr - in a style that is much closer to Romita Sr. than his own. Also important for me to thank James S for helping me make this happen. Without him - could not have gotten it. Below is a pic of my copy of the Try out book (most pages having been torn out long ago) Thanks for visting! Social/Sharing |

An upside down, web shootin', huge Spidey image is a fantastic way to start the new year! Congrats!

Regardless of the generation, a Romita Spidey is a Romita Spidey. In this case, you actually get the best of both worlds. The kid doing his best impression of the old man. Romita doing Romita. Looks like a double win to me. A great way to kick off 2022. Congrats!

Wow, proving that Jim Shooter is a spectacularly poor writer. The tortured english. No wonder Spidey is jumping. Hes trying to get away.

How did they think anyone new was going to be able to be as perfect as this?

Fun piece for sure! Classic looking Spidey, and yes, much more SR in JR's Spidey here :) Congrats, man!

Inject this directly into my veins! Beautiful composition from a book that inspired (and frustrated) many. I wish I still had my copy of this book, although I'm happy my pencilling and inking attempts will never see the light of day.

I love the Spidey image, but I'm concerned about how close he is to the sidewalk at this moment. Pay attention, Spidey! Don't start 2022 as a Spiderpancake!!

Welp, on to Tryout #2: Electric Boogaloo. Marvel Bullpen material, I am not. But you know what is up to snuff? This awesome splash! I love that angle, too. It's amazing that Spidey hasn't thrown up in his mask more often. Great score. Congrats!

Such a great splash from a book that brings back so much nostagia. But, here's a bit of information about the credits that you may not know--they're 100% real. This page was indeed drawn by John S. Romita, who is also known as John Romita, Jr. His full name is John Salvatore Romita. I know this because I bought art from him through his agent, Spencer Beck and when I wrote the check, I was told to make it out to John S. Romita, his real name! His father is John V. Romita. And, the folks at Heritage also put John Romita, Sr. in the credits so, I sent an email correcting them. So, now you know!

I really loved it when JRJR's style was closer to JRSR's and this is a great example!
