DescriptionI'm in love. This page encapsulates everything I admire about sequential storytelling. A page with exquisite pacing and a self-contained narrative. I'm always drawn to pages that capture a moment.....and what a moment! While most of this issue deals with Batman pursuing Solomon Grundy through the Gotham sewers - it's this page that truly stands out. It's December and Selina has been stood up on Christmas Eve. While Batman was dealing with multiple mysteries and attempting to thwart another Holiday murder by the Hangman - Bruce was nowhere to be found. We don't see much of Bruce in this series, Batman is becoming fully realized and Bruce is now secondary. The few times we see Bruce he's cold, distant, distracted. This time is different. Bruce seems vulnerable and contrite as he attempts to apologize in a touchingly poignant, and funny, scene. Throughout both Long Halloween and Dark Victory, Jeph and Tim explore the personal toll paid by Jim, Bruce and Harvey - as they crusade to make Gotham a better place. This page beautifully encapsulates that narrative thread. And the art! Visually stunning. Jeph's background is in movies and TV and this reads like a perfect movie moment. Tim as director and cinematographer nails it! Dark Victory is a masterful sequel to the critically acclaimed Long Halloween. Getting this art, opening the package and sharing this page with you all, on Valentine's Day is just the icing on the cake and tickles me pink! Happy Valentine's Day! Supplemental "I'm in the minority in that I much prefer [Dark Victory] to Long Halloween. I know that my work is better. I was a much better artist by the time I got to it than I was when I did Long Halloween." Sale told The Comics Journal. "Most people don’t look at it in the same way, or consider it the bastard stepchild. But I feel the opposite way about it." Social/Sharing |

I really love the quiet Bruce/Selina moment here. My favorite Dark Victory pages involve the two of them together, and this is a great example of their relationship. Fortunately for you, I wasn't able to bid on this, but huge congrats on this page!

No one is better at depicting the smaller, personal moments in a story than Jeph and Tim.

The panel of the eye says it all. Sale puts the emotional depth behind her stare as she sees he's not going to put up a defense to save this relationship.

Great camera work, so much visual interest created by the changing angles and zooms. Well done Master Bruce.

Camera angles, classic noir, a story within a page and a Tim Sale signature eye… Yup, no need to tell you – it's a great page…

Extraordinary page by a master! Love how Sale paces this scene. It's like watching a well-made movie. Beautiful work on a fabulous mini-series.

One, I'm a sucker for these kind storytelling moments. Two, I love the delicate linework on this page. Congrats on a great page Steve.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good splash page of a costumed hero. But I LOVE a great moment and piece of sequential storytelling even more. This one is a memorable scene for me, and Tim really gives it his all mixing the shots and camera angles. And just look at Bruce's facial expression. Brilliant work.
