Happy Birthday to one of my all time favorite creators, Keith Giffen, born November 30, 1952.

In 1994 Topps Comics produced a new series of books based on the creations of Jack Kirby. The KirbyVerse as it was known, was a mix of Jack�s creator owned characters such as Silverstar and Captain Victory and new characters Topps had developed. The titles did not last.

Unpublished cover to Victory #3 with inks by Terry Austin. Victory ended with issue #1 and issue #3 never saw print. However in a preview of what was to come, the cover image was published as the back cover to issue #1. So an unpublished cover becomes published promo art.

I never read the Topps comics but I love Giffen's art. I'm usually not a fan of gaudy colors but from what I've seen from the Topps comics online, I love the color scheme they were using. Bold and bright colors at a time when color was becoming more muted in comics. A throwback to the golden/silver age of comics, which is appropriate considering it is the KirbyVerse.

This is such a great cover, so dramatic. Giffen really captured the feel of Kirby's art and was therefore a great choice to bring on for the purpose of creating a KirbyVerse. Credit to Terry Austin, whose inks look very complimentary to Giffen's pencils here.

Perfect artist to carry forth the Kirbyverse! Even as Kirby passed away earlier that year, these issues showed ways in which Kirby's legacy lived on.
