DescriptionSuperman ALWAYS gets back up.I have often heard the argument that Superman is difficult to relate to; that he is over-powered and nearly a god among normal humans. I've never really understood that. I suppose it depends on who writes Superman or edits his comics. In general, though, I feel as if I can at least understand the character. He is an inspiration. He represents a model to aspire to. Not because of his strength, but for his devotion and will and tenacity. Superman ALWAYS gets back up. I have been staring at this page for years now on Albert Moy's website. Sure, I have always wanted to own a Jim Lee/ Scott Williams original page of art. But mostly, I gravitate to pages that tell a narrative on that single page of art. This page tells a story. In the first panel, new Superman foe Rogol Zaar gives us the inciting incident of the page. You can almost hear complete silence in the panel save for the low growl of the villain and the singing of his blade right before it penetrates the ground of Metropolis. Then, we get the outcome and the boom and rumble of the city shuddering beneath Rogol Zaar's power. Superman ALWAYS gets back up. The Man of Steel hears the sound of destruction, of danger and potential death. He is tired. Losing strength and the will to go on. He lifts his head to gaze up in an image complete with classic Lee/ Williams detail. He knows there is a job to do. It takes everything in Superman to lift himself to his hands and knees in the fourth panel as bystanders look on with dread of the imminent threat, but also with hope that their hero will rise. Their hero who is nearly defeated. In the final panel, Superman is on his feet. He doesn't want to stand; he has to. He faces the new threat to his home and the people he cares for. Duty propels him. Honor compels him. And love empowers him. Superman ALWAYS gets back up. Today is my birthday. I turn 40 years young. And I knew I wanted to buy myself something special. Getting older is such an odd thing. It's ODD, right? I remember when I was 14. I remember when I was 24. Wasn't I just 34 last year? No, I'm 40 now. And one of the few things that remains constant over the years is how tough life can be. We all struggle in our different, yet similar ways. And we need certain things to keep us going. I can honestly say my family helps me to do this. They motivate me to keep going. But so do the comic book characters that first inspired me at a young age. And no other character has that effect on me as much as Superman. I may not quite relate to him exactly, but I aspire to be like him. I am a little fearful of the future at the start of a fresh new decade ahead of me. I know I will be knocked down in new ways and I won't find it easy to stand back up against adversity. But just like Superman, I will get back up. I hope you find as much inspiration in this page of beautiful art from the 1,000th issue of Action Comics as much as I do. Thank you for viewing. All the best. Social/Sharing |

Happy birthday! A Jim Lee/Scott Williams page makes any day better, but it should make your big 4-0 particularly special!

I love that Jim Lee still does so much detail in his work after all these years. He never phones it in! Very cool page!

Lee and Williams on this special anniversary issue for your 40th birthday is a potent match! The page has the stimulating content and the special traits of a classic Superman page where his will and resolve takes center stage to inspire the world around him.

"Stimulating" is a perfect word for this page to me.

Those middle panels really anchor the page, don't they?

"Superman will ALWAYS get back up" - darn right, and something for us to look to in our own tough times. Love the page, man. ESSENCE of Kal-El, rendered beautifully by the stellar team of Lee/Willaims. So much to look at, and yes, we know Lee as a pin up guy mostly, but he's NO slouch on the storytelling front. Case in point. Huge congrats, my friend, and happy 40th birthday. Welcome to de club :)

Great Jim Lee and Scott Williams page demonstrating Superman's fighting spirit! I have a soft spot for these kinds of pages that aren't splashy but nonetheless exhibit why we love these characters and what they stand for. Congrats!
