DescriptionWhile there are still many key examples missing in my Philippine artist gallery, I have to say that the past year has been an exciting and rewarding one, in terms of what I HAVE been able to add. In this case, an almost 60-year-old cover by Filipino legend Nestor Redondo. Not only is this my first Redondo, it also has the distinction of being the oldest piece of art in my collection. I’m sure some (or many) of you will be mostly apathetic or even downright dismissive of this piece, as it is not from an American comic and features no known comic characters. But as someone whose main collecting focus is the ART, and not the content, value, or investment potential, I could not be happier about the fact that I didn’t have to pay 8-10k for a Swamp Thing cover or splash. And I could not be prouder of the fact that it’s from a comic published in our native Philippines.

You old romantic, you. You're fooling no one with your description. I expect a flurry of Romantic covers and interiors in your next update. This guy could really draw!

Speaking of the ravages of time, it looks in better condition than me.

What's really funny to me is when I look at the guy here, that's exactly how my mother used to comb my hair back in 1968. Haha! Also, it was probably the last time my hair was that short. As far as the paper condition, I don't know if I look that bad, but I certainly FEEL that way. Thanks for the comment my friend.

Is it just me or does that tree appear to be growing.

It is amazing how vibrant the inks still are after all these years. And yeah, as Peter Sullivan points out, and you as well, many of us are old enough to experience those 'ravages of time,' haha! Really happy for you that you grabbed this one. It truly is a beautiful scene that stirs the emotions.

Very cool. I sometimes think Redondo would have been better off in strips. His attention to detail is just wonderful.

Very fine and elegant lines in this very early Nestor Redondo's artwork. I agree you. Sometimes the ART calls... because it is just BEAUTIFUL and masterfully executed. That's a perfect example of that fact. Huge congrats!

That is a beautiful Redondo cover, the inking is just fantastic. I enjoy seeing Romance covers even though it's outside of my own personal collecting norms, the art is timeless. Congrats!

I get told content, value, and investment potential are even more important when you're retired.

Lush inks by Nestor Redondo !! Even now, regardless of the genre (or language), Redondo's style is very recognizable. He was just the greatest Filipino import by DC at the time.

I would probably have to think on that a bit before I agreed or disagreed with you. There was a time I might have actually thought of Redondo as a tad overrated. Probably having to do with how he seemed to overshadow the rest of the pack so much. Was he really that much better than everyone else technically and artistically? Or was it just collector hype? Don't get me wrong, I think he was a phenomenal artist. But I think I just have too much respect for too many of his peers to unequivocally label him the GOAT. At the same time, I totally understand why many would. Thanks for the comment buddy!

Eric, this is a beautiful piece of art. Truly, if I had known about it, I might well have rivalled you for it. The contribution of the Filipino artists to (amongst others) US comics is still hugely underestimated, in my view. However, nothing beats obtaining one of their earlier pieces back in their homeland. I recall being so excited when I was able to purchase the Coching cover.
On a somewhat different note, the new wave of Filipino artists repped by Jiggy Cruz demonstrates the wonderful artistic talent that continues to flow from that country. I only hope that more of them are given an opportunity to contribute to US comics as well.
Many congrats once again on a wonderful piece of art.

Beauuuutiful rendering here - wow! - on an image that reads perfectly: gorgeous young people in the bloom of youth, with all the joys (and challenges) that brings with it. Super clean and crisp: a terrific and legit example that also allows you to cross an all-timer off the list? That's Modern Komiks, baby!! :) Congrats, Eric - this is lovely!

I've never noticed a Filipino contribution to the industry. Thanks to you I've been educated. Lovely Romance cover.
