The first time I saw this book on the stands, it literally froze me in my tracks! And whereas I usually make exclamations like “HOLY @#$%” in my head, this time I stood there in the middle of the comic shop and said it out loud. After I recovered from the shock, I spent the next half hour trying to figure out that damn signature in hopes that I could track the artist down or even find out who his rep was. Unfortunately it turned out to be a dead end for me. Fast forward three years later and what should I find in Adan’s gallery but this very cover! I of course posted a comment on the piece and then emailed Adan privately to tell him how much I loved the piece. That was in 2006. Fast forward again to Spring of 2007 when I received the email I had been hoping for. While I was ecstatic over his offer to sell the piece to me, we couldn’t quite come to terms on the price. It wasn’t until just before I left for San Diego in July that we finally came to terms. As for the art, I think the image pretty much speaks for itself. This was only the second of Philip Tan’s run of X-Men covers that began in the summer of 2003, and it is easily my absolute favorite! He’s produced some amazing artwork since then, but this was the one that started it all for me. Of course my thanks to Adan Salazar for putting our deal on hold until I returned from San Diego, and for giving me a shot at this beauty in the first place. Please be sure to check out Adan’s gallery for links to his website, or just visit comicartsource.com for lots of great artwork to buy! Social/Sharing |

A fantastic cover by Phillip S. Tan aka PST. I always love the detail you go into when you describe how you came about acquiring the art. It shows how much you love this hobby and each piece of art in your collection. Congratulations on the pick up. Cheers! N.

Awesome! I have one he did that didn't get published. I think he was young and hungry to impress here. His most meticulous inking period.

Thanks Seamus. I think you nailed it with your "hungry to impress" comment. This drawing is nothing if not ambitious. When you look at all his subsequent X-covers, nothing even comes close. The only one I've seen in the same league is your unpublished cover. Very similar in its meticulous rendering.

Same here. I had no idea until I met him one year at San Diego and he was speaking Tagalog with his wife/girlfriend. I made the same initial mistake with Ernie and Lenil. Since the last names Chan and Yu don't necessarily jump out as Filipino.

having grown up in canada i'm not too patriotic when it comes to my filipino heritage—except when it comes to the comic book artists and food haha; lately i even learned how to pronounce jay anacleto's last name lol

Powerful cover by the great Philip Tan! I love this image of Logan breaking away from the chains that bound him. The anger on his face is palpable! It's firghtening the way he's looking at the reader as if ready to slice and dice! What's really scary is that left hand reaching out as if to grab us! By putting the reader in the place of Wolverine's tormenter, the cover makes us potential targets of Wolverine's beserker rage! Another amazing work of art by Philip Tan! He's astonishingly talented! Great pick-up, congrats!

An awesome very memorable cover!
Thanks buddy! Memorable is right. From the moment I saw the comic on the stands, I couldn't get it out of my mind. Never imagined I would find it, much less own it. But I got lucky. I even have a Tshirt with this image on it. I still remember wearing it to SDCC and walking up to Philip. He said, "Hey, that's my cover!" And I said, "Actually, it's mine." LOL!
