Description

Larger-than life splash from the early 2000's Defenders series by Busiek and Larsen. Larsen's take on those classic characters was very bold, energetic and dynamic, with many powerful splashes and double page splashes.

Back then some fans felt the syle was overly expressive, possibly not on par with his work on ASM a few years earlier. Instead, and incredibly for a bona fide Sal Buscema fan like me, I appreciated Larsen's effort to do something different with those classic characters, and have grown over the years to appreciate more and more his approach. I see a lot of Kirby in those pages, not imitated but reinterpreted in line with the late '90s and early 00's tastes.

On top of that, Valkyrie is one of my favourite Marvel characters, and I truly enjoy this original version of her persona in her classic costume.

Excellent inks by Janson, as usual.

Erik's appreciation for Kirby is so evident in this work, from the lines, heavy blacks, and unmistakable Kirby Krackle. Just a great example of Erik's work on the Defenders run. Congrats - thanks for sharing!

Big and powerful man hands or maybe even Hulk Hands on Valkyrie! It has the obvious Kirby influences and the Image storytelling style he used in Savage Dragon.

Stellar piece in your AMAZING collection! I wish this version of the Defenders had lasted longer. It was such a fun book!
