DescriptionWhen I started collecting original art years ago, I never anticipated that I would one day own an Overstreet Price Guide cover, let alone one by Jackson "Butch" Guice.I have loved Guice's work ever since I was a kid. His work on Ruse with Mark Waid was just exquisite as was his work on Captain America with Ed Brubaker. I have always appreciated Butch's take on Bucky Barnes and when his agent, Dave Karlen, contacted me about purchasing this cover, I had to jump on the opportunity. The scan doesn't do justice to the textures and ink wash effects that Butch used in designing this cover, so I am including a photograph of the actual cover in my gallery. And by the way, the Overstreet Price Guide with this cover will be coming out in August 2022. Social/Sharing |

Fnasntsic! (That's my astonished fingers trying to type "fantastic!", obviously frostbitten by the elements so beautifully rendered here...) Good heavens - Butch Guice never seems to get the love that he deserves, and I am absolutely stumped as to why that is. His Captain America run (among many, MANY others) produced such solid work, and he distills all of it, every last drop, into this glorious thing. Standing strong in the face of the unforgiving (and sublimely depicted) elements (look at the wind howl! look at the snow swirl!), you just KNOW the Winter Soldier isn't going to miss this impossible shot he's teeing up... A fantastic testament to the character and the great stories we've all enjoyed him in. Prize pick up, A K! Mega-congrats!

Thank you for the great comment, my friend! And I'm with you; I don't know why Guice hasn't gotten the love he deserves. I've been a huge fan since I read Swords of the Swashbucklers so many years ago...

Overstreet cover! Oh, man, I'm right with you about wanting one, too. I've poured though these since I was a kid, wearing out pages, seeing if I was being offered a fair price. Lots of great collecting memories. And what a sweet one from Guice, with the Winter Soldier, no less. Awesome. Big congrats!

The Overstreet guides were part of so many childhoods, mine included. Thanks for the comment!

The photograph tells the story of this cover better as it has Guice more of a painter with his creativity using the brush. This is the modern style that he used for stories of the Winter Soldier that helped push the character into prominence. Guice puts the comic world on notice with an Overstreet cover!

That's exactly why I included the photograph, Marcus! No scan, as good as it could be, did justice to the textures that Guice created for this cover. "A painter with his creativity" is a lovely phrase and one I will have to remember.

As fine a Guice piece as I have ever seen. This piece does such a great job of pulling you in, that you can almost FEEL the cold. Butch has really outdone himself here. Fantastic pickup! Congrats!

Thank you, Eric! I'm very lucky that Butch's agent gave me first crack at this cover.

Guice is perfect for the more street wise/spy-ish characters.

One of the best drawings of the Winter Soldier I have ever seen. Jackson Guice masterfully rendered the costume, the weapon, and the background; however, the star of this piece for me is the face of Bucky Barnes

Bucky's face is what I keep going back to, as well. Thanks for the comment, my friend!

Stunning cover !! I've been a huge Guice fan since early 1992 and his art never fails to impress me ! I love his ink wash work and this is a great example of his mastery of that technique !

Thank you, Gal! It's great to hear from another long-time Guice fan. The ink wash was a big part of what drew me to this cover.

I remember when the Brubaker run was coming out and I rebelled against the idea of reading it since I heard Bucky was brought back to life. Nearly 20 years later and I am finally getting over my irrational dislike as I just finished reading the first 20 issues of the run and I love it. And I love the Winter Soldier now. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE Butch Guice's work.
Sooooooooo... I started looking here on CAF for Winter Soldier work and lo and behold- I see your Overstreet cover here. I know others have said this in the comments above. And this might seem like hyperbole. But this truly has to be the greatest rendition of the Winter Solider in a single image.
I could go on like others before me about how the winter setting helps make the piece. Or how Guice's techniques are top notch. But I do want to say two simple things-
1) I like how he's pointing his rifle and
2) I like how his cybernetic arm is emphasized here.
I'm not entirely sure why, but I think this is one of the most intelligently, creatively composed pieces of artwork I've seen in a long time. It completely illustrates Guice's mastery. And it is downright COOL.
I will definitely be back to view this; I've got it in my favorites here on CAF now. AND-- I just put a copy of this Overstreet edition into my Amazon cart. Thank you so much for sharing. All the best!

Wow. I don't know whether I have ever received a more thoughtful comment on one of my artworks. Thank you so much! Guice is special, as you so aptly note. His mastery of anatomy, mood and technical drawing are all apparent in this cover.
I was like you; I thought it was a very bad idea to bring Bucky back. But Brubaker and Epting and Guice and others made the Winter Soldier into a poignant character and now he is one of my favorite Marvel characters.
Thank you also for reminding me to pick up a copy of the Overstreet price guide with my art on the cover! I need to see with my own eyes how this piece looks in color. But Guice's pen and ink technique is so flawless, I am sure that I will prefer this black and white version. Thanks again for your kind comments, my friend.

Stunning Winter Soldier cover by Butch Guice! It's a strong image of Winter Soldier aiming his sniper rifle. I love the way Guice rendered the clouds and blowing snow, you can almost feel the cold wind on your neck. Great pick-up!

Thank you very much, Bill! I agree with you; Guice did a great job rendering the weather here. It reminds me of the first time I saw Dr. Zhivago -- where I could feel the cold seeping into my bones.
