Very nice Herriman piece! The sunshine radiation waves are a hot illustration effect being cut off the background. Leaving the ground stark white makes the ground look desert barren from all that heat.

A wonderful piece by the master. I love the little zigzag shadows. They remind me of the Navajo symbolism that Herriman would often use.
