Nice Rob.  How many El Paso bars did you have to hit before finding these?

There's was a restaurant in Northern NM that had a Mauldin hanging on the wall, but they went out of business during Covid.  I've been wondering what might've happened to that drawing.

I recall reading that these were done for a proposed stip that didn't find a buyer.  Several were later used in Help! Magazine which Kurtzman edited for Warren.

Oh yeah, they were called "Fliks"

Very cool how Kelly was able to bring the strip to the long form comic page storytelling.  It still retained everything we loved in the strip about the linework and the characterization of the cast.

Actually, the comics books came first.  Pogo's first appearance in Animal Comics #1 pre-dates the stip by 7 years.

Fantastic piece.  Are Colan's pencils on this?  I know Palmer light-boxed some of the later covers.

Sounds about right. Island of Death, Search, Pirate Gold (I assume?), and ...?

Radioactive Child and The Last War.  So I guess that makes five.

A true original! You almost never see these -- most of his EC stories seem to be kept complete.

I only know of 4 that have been broken up

There was a kids' show character in New York in the 60's called Norton Nork.  I wonder if Kirby used that as inspiration for this character's name.

So many levels to this, and it's a proto-Krazy Kat at that.  Is the dropping floor Kat is on due to Officer Pup in order to thwart Ignatz's brick throwing?  I assume the balloon (or whatever it is) was placed by Ignatz, not Pup?  I'm amazed you've figured out as much as you describe re the cryptic words in the lower panels.  Thanks for posting this terrific strip and your analysis!

I think the kat's looking at a hat in a shop window, and the sidewalk is lowering as they would sometimes do in cities to access the basement.
