DescriptionYuko needs no introduction. She is an award-winning illustrator who has been nothing but generous with her time, especially to aspiring artists. Her range of subject matter also has no peer (as evidenced by the present illustration). However, one thing is sure - her work is of the very highest quality. This illustration was done for an article in the Fall 2013 issue of the football/soccer magazine 8 by 8. Football or soccer fans of a less recent vintage will recall the remarkable talents of the late Argentian football legend, Diego Armando Maradona (who sadly passed away at the relatively young age of 60 on 25 November 2020). He was a footballing genius and a mercurial talent. Although this might not appear to be an apt analogy, I cannot help comparing him to that great comics artist, Wally Wood. There appears to be some correlation between genius and madness. This is not always the case though - Pele, for example (whom I respectfully think was a greater player than even Maradona, was quite normal). The quarter-final World Cup 1986 match between England and Argentina epitomized the contrasting qualities that Maradona possessed. He scored both goals in a 2-1 win. The first, also illustrated by Yuko and which is to be found in Cristian Casares's CAF gallery, was a blatant handball by Maradona which was missed by the referee. Often dubbed a goal scored by "the Hand of God", it ought never to have been allowed. Maradona may have been a soccer "god", but this was far from godlike behavior, regardless of the perspective one takes. The second goal, however, which is the subject of the present illustration was not only a valid one but a brilliant one. The wings which Yuko affixed to Maradona are perhaps prophetic in hindsight, now that he is truly no longer with us on this side of eternity. I can do no better at this juncture than to reproduce the following description from the Wikipedia description of the match itself: Four minutes after the Hand of God goal came The Goal of the Century, which is often cited as the greatest individual goal of all time. Midfielder Héctor Enrique passed the ball to Maradona inside his own half. Maradona then began his 60-yard, 10-second dash towards the English goal, passing four English outfield players: Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid, Terry Butcher (twice) and Terry Fenwick. Maradona finished the move with a feint that left goalkeeper Peter Shilton on his bottom, before slotting the ball into the empty net to make the score 2–0 to Argentina. About the goal, Maradona said, "I made the play to give it to Valdano, but when I got to the area they surrounded me and I had no space. Therefore, I had to continue the play and finish it myself." He later complimented the fair play of the English team, saying, "I don't think I could have done it against any other team because they all used to knock you down; they are probably the noblest in the world". In 2002, the goal was voted 'Goal of the Century' as part of the buildup to the 2002 FIFA World Cup tournament on the FIFA website. It beat a goal scored by England's Michael Owen against Argentina in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which came second, whilst another 1986 FIFA World Cup goal by Maradona, from the semi-final match against Belgium, came fourth. In Spanish-speaking countries, this goal is usually associated with the hysterically passionate live commentary by Uruguayan journalist Víctor Hugo Morales (translation from Spanish): He's going to pass it to Diego, there's Maradona with it, two men on him, Maradona steps on the ball, there goes down the right flank the genius of world football, he leaves the wing and he's going to pass it to Burruchaga... Still Maradona! Genius! Genius! Genius! There, there, there, there, there, there! Goaaaaaaaal! Goaaaaaaal! I want to cry, oh holy God, long live football! What a goal! Diegoal! Maradona! It is to cry for, excuse me! Maradona, in a memorable run, in the best play of all times! Cosmic kite, which planet did you come from, to leave so many Englishmen behind, for the country to be a clenched fist crying for Argentina? Argentina 2, England 0! Diegoal, Diegoal, Diego Armando Maradona! Thank you, God, for football, for Maradona, for these tears, for this Argentina 2, England 0. — Víctor Hugo Morales A Postscript: As I have always maintained, nothing in life happens by coincidence. Maradona's shirt that was worn for this match has just come on for auction (apparently, there has, at the time of writing, been an initial bid of some 4 million pounds sterling). A lovely illustrated of what was indeed, very possibly the greatest goal of all time. I've watched it on YouTube countless times and each time it feels like the first time, the chills and goosebumps never fail, despite knowing exactly what is about to happen. A marvelous description as well!
