DescriptionSo first of all for context, I am from a small town in West Virginia, but I grew up at a lake about 20 minutes outside of town. I have also been a Simpsons fan for pretty much the majority of my life.Rewind back to the early 90's. I am around 10 years old and The Simpsons were on Thursday nights on Pittsburgh's FOX station WPGH 53. The big problem is we didn't get FOX at the lake where I grew up. For some reason, still unbeknownst to me, our cable provider did not have it. I can't really recall the first time I saw a Simpsons episode, but I knew I had to see these new episodes that were airing every week. I ended up coercing my grandparents, who lived in town, into recording the episodes for me every week. This required the help of my mom, a VCR we had, and some blank tapes. So over the course of those early seasons I would get the tape that weekend and be able to watch the episode. A couple of funny things to note about this viewing technique is that my grandparents wouldn't always perfectly record the episode, and sometimes I would miss the couch gag at the beginning. These minor technical errors would also result in me getting to catch about 6-7 minutes of In Living Color after the episode was over. Also, after a few recordings had arrived and been thoroughly enjoyed, I was informed that my grandparents did not find The Simpsons to be humorous in the least! My grandmother is 98 years old as I type this, and I do not believe her stance has changed. Regardless, they still continued to record the episodes for me until we finally got FOX, and I can't say how thankful I really am for them doing it. I even continued to record The Simpsons at my house after that, and believe it or not, I actually still have some of those tapes today! I'm not a hoarder, you are a hoarder! (see VHS pic, top tape is my grandmother's handwriting). Okay, now fast forward that tape some thirty years ahead to Heroes Con 2022. Thursday night I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Morrison and so many of you at Super Abari bar for the kickoff party. I went up to Bill and just told him I was a big Simpsons fan and always thought it was so cool to see Radioactive Man get turned into an actual comic, along with all those other wonderful Bongo Simpsons and Futurama releases. The Con progresses over the weekend, and as I am checking stuff off of my list, I realize I haven't been to Bill's table yet. I head over, he is drawing. I do not disturb and start looking through the portfolio at a number of original pieces. After viewing some of them, I noticed that there was an excellent piece with all of the kids and Bart on his skateboard which immediately caught my eye. It just so happens that this was used as a cover for one of the Best Of The Simpsons VHS releases. We started talking and I told him about my grandparents recording those old episodes. I went through the portfolio for a second flip to be thorough, but I think my mind was already made up. I ultimately decided on this piece after we both referenced that the image of Bart is from episode 7F06 “Bart the Daredevil”, when he attempts to jump Springfield Gorge. A legendary episode, which is without a doubt one of my favorites, and definitely in the discussion for one of the best Simpsons episodes of all time. The first time I ever watched Homer Simpson bounce all the way down to the bottom of Springfield Gorge was indeed on one of those early VHS tapes my grandparents would lovingly record for me. Huge thanks to Bill Morrison and 4C Comics for a truly nostalgic piece of art! See additional pics for the front and back of the VHS. Interesting to see that they switched the background on the actual release. I think I like what Bill did here better with everyone in front of Bart's house. Social/Sharing |

Very cool that Morrison could release these originals! For a long time they could not. The Simpsons, In Living Color, Married With Children, 21 Jump Street, etc. were a revolution in television slowly expanding until they got the NFL which forced more uptight places to carry them. Morrison probably had the most refined look to capture the animation look to put in print. But what do I know? I went to Bovine University.

Thank you Marcus! I didn't know that they were unable to release some of the art. So true with those other shows too. Felix and I were talking about how big Married With Children was, along with the fact that the role of Al Bundy was one that Ed O'Neill just couldn't escape from, still legendary though. Completely agree in regards to the look, it always felt very close to the show for me.
Bovine U ya say? Don't kid yourself Marcus, if a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about.

I love Simpsons animated pencil art like this even better than looking at the animation. It's so great! But Tyler, you overshadowed the art with an even better story in your description, but I can't blame you for that. Great stuff, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Ruben, you are right, I really did. I should have went into some more detail about all of the facial expressions (look at Nelson, compared to everyone else), and how great Bart's pose is. This is definitely the most nostalgic piece I have acquired so far, and that nostalgia took over in the description :)

Great story! Love hearing about the ways kids worked their relatives in order to get their pop-media fix! Bill Morrison's Simpsons art is second to none and you got yourself a great example!

Thanks John! It was all an Appalachian boy could do to watch the show. My grandmother still laughs about recording those episodes for me.

A fabulous piece! I appreciate your story as back in the early 1990s, I was someone who was recording "The Simpsons" on VHS for a friend. My friend got the Fox Network in his house, but his parents didn't like having it on since they viewed it as too low brow. I'd give my friend a month's worth of episodes at a time for him to watch when his parents weren't around. Wacky to think about it now, as those episodes were so tame compared to what's easily available for viewing today. That being said, I'm guessing that VHS tapes were used to get "The Simpsons" into many people's hands in those days. I miss those days,

Thank you Michael!! I love hearing that someone else had to watch them this way! It sounds like you were a pretty good friend to record them for him. And so true in regards to the reputation of The Simpsons back then, hard to believe how TV has changed since. A good reminder to "Don't have a cow, man."

I LOVE when a collector takes the time to really go into details with their descriptions! Means the piece really means something to them! And boy what a great description and wonderful piece!
Well done!

Cool piece and even cooler backstory! Nothing is better than picking up something that has so much nostalgic and sentimental value. Congrats!
