DescriptionUpdate: 2nd place in Best of CAF 2023So I haven't posted anything in a while so I figured I'd start with one of my favorite pickups from the last few weeks. I revisited a lot of the top Batman stories recently, and if I'm being completely honest, some of them didn't age well. I am now convinced the Long Halloween is the greatest Batman story ever written (which isn't a super controversial opinion). There is a reason Christopher Nolan and Matt Reeves have borrowed so heavily from it. I never truly appreciated Tim Sale's art until he was no longer with us. He was the perfect artist for creating the tone of this story and produced just one incredible image after another. I've picked up quite a few pages from this story now but I love these double page splashes. There are very few that feature Batman so I couldn't pass on this given the opportunity. Tim's take on Scarecrow is iconic and I always get a Dark Knight Returns vibe when I see Batman with a horse. Social/Sharing |

Batman putting some fear into the master of fear. You'd be hard pressed to find a better Tim Sale DPS than this. It's a gem.

He sure is :) Thank you, Jared! It was one of my favorite images from the series so I was super happy to snag it.

Beautiful page by Tim. He was running on all cylinders when working with Jeph. Batman riding into Gotham with the Scarecrow just perfect. The Long Halloween was the perfect vehicle to showcase Tim's art. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks for the comment, Nathan! Loeb with Sale was such a perfect pairing -- they produced some incredible stories together. It didn't really dawn on me until recently how much top quality work they churned out.

The use of black on this DPS is impeccable. In black and white, it's almost as if lightning just lit everything and provided gorgeous contrast. Great addition Andrew!

Thanks, Eric! I totally agree, Tim absolutely nailed the shadows on this one. It's strange, I usually have a strong preference (color vs b&w) for OA pages, but with this storyline I am split on almost every page. I really love the coloring but at the same time, there are so many pages that feel like a master class in replicating the visual style of 40/50s film noir.

Gorgeous double splash. No one does Scarecrow like Sale, and I agree about the story maybe being the best Batman tale I've read.

Thank you! Definitely on the same page re: Sale's Scarecrow -- I think he was the best to ever draw him.

Uses the DPS so well with the horse running trying not to tip over and struggling on the left side while Scarecrow and Batman are pulling the momentum towards the right and down.

Ah very cool. Where did you see it? I heard it went on a little roadshow before it got to me. Thanks for the comment, Steve!

Fantastic DPS, certainly my favorite in Long Halloween. Like yourself I'm becoming more of a Tim Sale fan as time passes. I agree his art was perfect for the tone of that book. It really felt sinister and suspenseful to match the text brilliantly. Great pickup Andrew!

Thank you, Paul! Kind of you to say :) It's funny how our tastes shift as we age. I really was not a fan of Tim initially, and now I think he was one of the greatest contributors to the medium from his generation.

Thanks, Sonu! Definitely not many. Took me forever to find one. Was shaking a lot of trees privately and in the end none of it mattered. Then, one day, it just popped up lol. I don't go to a lot of conventions so I hadn't seen it before XD

OMG! What a fabulous DPS from Batman: The Long Halloween! Stunning work by the incredible Tim Sale! I love how Sale drew the Scarecrow here, all flipsy and flopsy like a real hay-filled scarecrow would be. And putting the very solid Batman on the back of the horse is such a strong contrast. I love Sale's use of thick spots of black to contrast with his beautiful thin linework! This is such a classic piece of comic book history! Congrats!

Thats a tough question Batman asked, isn't it? I mean, the horse was doing the running. As we all know, scarecrows cannot run but are too ashamed to admit it.

Forget the Flash vs Superman race. Batman vs Horse is clearly the race everyone should care about. ;)

Absolutely phenomenal Tim Sale piece! For me, this would be a one and done example. At least in terms of Long Halloween or Batman art. Such an incredible talent and so sorely missed.

Thank you, Eric! Sorry for the delayed response -- didn't see this until now! Yes, this piece very much feels like a good closer for my Long Halloween collection. Never say never though: this was a special story with lots of great pages!
