DescriptionBart Sears had his second claim show with the CAL YouTube channel a while back, and when I saw this page in the preview email, I knew I had to try for it! It's rare enough to see pages from Eclipso: The Darkness Within for sale, but to find a page with L.E.G.I.O.N. characters featured so prominently??? I was practically ecstatic. We get some great L.E.G.I.O.N. moments on this page, with Vril Dox being his usual, charming self, and his Deputy, Phase, clearly being SO done with him. And Dox's little interaction with Hawkman in the bottom panel is one of my favourite moments from the whole issue. This enormous crossover issue was the culmination to DC's 1992 run of annuals, which all tied into the Eclipso: TDW event. I, of course, followed L.E.G.I.O.N.'s exploits throughout the crossover, which means that this issue here is how I was introduced to Bart's artwork. And let me tell you, I was an instant fan (which surprised me a little, considering I usually prefer the softer touch to my art, a la Barry Kitson or Jeff Moy). Bart's work embodies the stylistic, larger-than-life look of the '90s, with a twist that makes his style uniquely his own. This page here comes immediately after the title page. I don't say this lightly, but I think the whole "opening sequence" of TDW #2, leading up to the title page, is my favourite opening sequence in any comic I've ever read. The stakes are set, our heroes formulate a plan of attack, the writers throw in a spectacular Max Beerbohm quote, we get a gorgeous title splash page and a fantastic title for the issue... and then all that tension/momentum is perfectly broken by the way Vril Dox snipes at Phase in the first panel, there. It's pretty subtle compared to other examples from the time, but it's one of my personal favourite moments of '90s comic humour. Now, onto everything I love about the page itself! First off, where else am I, as a Legion and Legion-adjacent collector, going to find a page that fits in my collection while still featuring so many non-Legion characters? In addition to L.E.G.I.O.N.naires Vril Dox, Phase, Stealth, and Lobo (his abs are just visible at the top of the second panel, there), this page also features Guy Gardner, Fire, Ice, Elongated Man, Booster Gold, Aquaman, Metamorpho, Nightwing, Bloodwynd, Hawkman, Starman, Wildebeest, Red Ryan, Professor Haley, Rocky Davis, Blue Devil, Crimson Fox, and Bronze Tiger (phew!). Sears is (rightfully) known and loved for the way he draws all our favourite comic book women, but I've always been of the opinion that he does a damn good job of drawing all our favourite male characters, too, so I'm glad to have a page that showcases so many of them. It's honestly incredible to be able to examine the art up close and see how much detail Bart fit into every single panel, and yet somehow the art never feels cluttered or messy. Even ignoring how many characters are in every panel, the sheer amount of lines on this page - from the hatched shading to the scales on Hawkman's armour - is just astonishing! As a final note, I can't say for sure who the inker for this page is. The issue's credits list three of them, but I'm pretty sure it's not Raymond Kryssing, since it seems like he worked on the final pages of the book. That means it's a toss-up between Mark Pennington (who seems to have inked the start of the book) and Randy Elliott. Since this page comes pretty early in the issue, I've given this one to Pennington (but do let me know if I'm wrong!). Social/Sharing |

This crossover look is definitely outside of the established Legion style as Sears puts them on equal terms with the other heroes involved with that gritty look! Sears' brutes and babe style will age up your Legion youngsters fast!

Nice page from the series, co-plotted by Keith Giffen, that lauched two seerate albiet short-lived series, Eclpso and Valor.

I have to wonder if Giffen being a co-plotter for this series is why Dox and L.E.G.I.O.N. were featured so prominently in this issue, compared to all of DC's other summer crossovers.
